Hello folks. I am writing this review after using the triband Internet service for more than 3 years now. I am using this service from the Nerul Telephone exchange area in Navi Mumbai. I am a very happy customer, in fact even surprised that a government company like MTNL can provide such good facility. Before using MTNL I was a customer of Iqara (plz read that review also) and certainly MTNL is 100 times better than iqara. I would like to discuss about the triband services of MTNL with the help of the following points:
- New connection: Obtaining a new connection is quite simple. You can call up their toll-free numbers or send a request through email or visit the nearest telephone exchange. The entire process of installation gets completed within 1 week of application.
You can use either a LAN card or the usb to connect your pc to the Internet. In any case you will require a router, which can be purchased from outside or rented from MTNL at Rs.80/month.
Though one aspect where MTNL can improve is by recruiting new staff to take care of the internet activities because I have seen in my case that the people who had come to my place for installation were the ordinary lineman who had no idea of how to install the device and the drivers etc.
Remember one thing, the time required for new connection depends on the no. of applications in the telephone exchange but I feel that it is worth the wait.
Speed: This is the place where I like MTNL above others like Sify or Iqara. On almost all packages, speeds upto 2mbps can be expected. Even if you opt for unlimited plans you get speeds upto 2mbs which I am sure no other private service provider (whose speed is usually not more than 128 kbps) in Mumbai. The download speeds are also good. I download songs and it takes less than a minute for a 5mb song!!
Connectivity: I have experienced that the connection support is generally good but sometimes it can go down very severely even if there is a slight problem in the connecting wires from the phone to the router.
One more problem that I sometimes experience is that when I am connected to the net and if I pick up the phone to make/receive call, there are high chances of temporary disconnections. This happens because of the shorting of the wires that takes place when the calls are made/received. This problem comes into the picture due to the inadequacy of the training provided to the persons who undertake the job of installation.
Service: MTNL is trying to provide customer help line for all its services but it can do better. However, best part about their customer care centers are that they are in true words customer care because till today whenever I have called them up, they have patiently listened to my questions and have always given me very convincing and unambiguous answers.
Cost: MTNL lives upto its tagline “MTNL hain toh sahi hain”. The tariff structure is very transparent. All the details are clearly mentioned in the bill and as well as the website of MTNL. MTNL provides various types of packages to suit the needs of various customers. Whatever it is, MTNL does not cheat its customers unlike other players like Iqara or Sify.
One more advantage is that you can migrate from one tariff plan to other according to your needs and it is done free-of-charge. So, no easy-money making business practices over here.
- Billing: Same as cost, the billing is also very transparent. Their website provides with the latest data about data downloaded, the session time, session history and other account information. The bill separately includes the triband charges along with the rentals and taxes.
After writing so many pros, its time to write about a few cons too. Please remember that it is a government company after all and so don’t expect anything to be done spontaneously. For new connections the wait can be a long one, however, in case of problems that might occur later they generally do respond quickly. One thing I have noticed is that- in case of registering complaints, instead of complaining by phone, lodging the complaint online attracts faster response (donno why?).
All in all, I would definitely recommend readers to go for MTNL triband.
