Decided to drive from Mumbai to Harihareshwar suddenly one fine morning. Decent drive - only that a road stretch of about 10-15 kms was horribly potholed. Checked into MTDC - probably the best in the area - could not see anything better in the area. There are a lot of private B&B with signboards declaring "Approved by MTDC" - decided not to look into any them, went straight to the MTDC.
Had a look at the 'Deluxe tent' - the most expensive cottage, and the closest to the beach. It was too small, and also infested with too many insects for my comfort. The 'Konkan' cottage was decent, insect free, except for the bathroom. Bathroom had some of ants - that I decided was ok. That was big decision, considering that I hate the presence of even a single insect in the rooms.
And the place is in the middle of almost a forest :-) The guy at the reception was helpful - he had suggested that I have a look at all the room types and then decide. The restaurant was just about 2-3 minutes walk from the room, and the beach another 2 minutes. The place does not look very elegant, but the place is just about ok. The restaurant food of good - possibly because I had lowered my expectations.
And the guys in the restaurant were very polite and accommodative to my stringent gastronomical requirements - made stuff to my order, even when it was not on the menu. But prepared to give them a 30 minute notice - they cook after you place the order. Probably faster during weekends when, as I understand, the place is full. I had gone on a Friday, and the place was almost deserted. Beach is definitely serene, and the whole place was divine - with the light sound of the wave and the wind. I was lucky that the place was virtually deserted as it was a weekday. To cut short and summarize - for a place as desolate as Harihareshwar, MTDC is ok - and probably the best bet. But keep your expectations under control.
