LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA - music review

By now, it is common knowledge that music is a vital cog in the wheel of vision that Anurag Kashyap has for his films. So much so that even movies by his proteges have had exceptional music, be it UDAAN ( Vikramaditya Motwane ) SHAITAAN ( Bejoy Nambiar ) and the recent AIYYAA ( Sachin Kundalkar ) Bear in mind that these were all debutants making these efforts even more clapworthy. Also, lest we forget Amit Trivedi has hit what one would call in cricketing terms a purple patch. So it is with unabated breath that one listens to this OST. Does LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA deliver ? Read on.

KIKLIKALERDI: This is the song promo from LUV SHUV TEY..currently airing on all channels. Though the title of the song takes time getting used to ( strangely kikli sounds more like chipkali, the hindi word for a lizard ) it is safe to presume that the makers think of THIS song as chart buster material. And there are a number of good reasons why. Firstly the use of the flute, nay the baansuri which weaves a magical thread around the whole song. Also the exotic mix of the nasal vocals of Pinky Maidasani with that of the super confident Yo Yo Honey Singh backed by the omipresent Trivedi is heady. As always Amit Trivedi uses the chorus ( at one point they go AAAA-AAAA-AAAA-AA-AA ) to add zing to the already super catchy beats.

MOTORWADA :

Yo motorwada re tashan me ghuma ji munda

Yo motorwada tom & jerry dekha rove ji

Rotten hai chora fokat munda karde ji kunda

Yo motorwada gaave ragni hip-hop me ji.....

Inspite of Amit Trivedi again doing a credible job, it is the superb Tochi Raina who owns this song . Singing with a certain robust style and attitude, Tochi is one of four other amazing male voices on this soundtrack. And fundoo lyrics ( by the talented Shellee aka Shailendra Singh Sodhi of DEV D fame ) coupled with funky sounds make up this one memorable. Indeed every soundtrack of Amit Trivedi has that one song which defies description. In LUV SHUV TEY.. it is Motorwada. Hip Hop meets Bhangra meets Western Spaghetti film music would be perhaps the only way to call it. THE song of the soundtrack.

LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA : Notwithstanding Trivedi's good record when it comes to composing title ditties, this one is a bit of a letdown. The quirkyness of the title is partly to blame for the listener half presumes it to be a comical song ( on the lines of Chak de Phatte from Khosla ka Ghosla ) Instead what one gets is a slow paced but warm romantic number salvaged to a large extent by the earnest sounding Shahid Mallya ( at one point the male protagonist implores his woman " kara seva teri, tere pair main dabavaanga ) and Harshdeep Kaur ( more on her in the next song )

LUNI HASI : ( Female version ) Along with KikliKalerdi and Motorwada, this is another gem. The beats are retro, the bluesy tune is tinged with sadness yet is almost hypnotic in effect. And it has much to do with Harshdeep Kaur's gud ( jaggery ) like voice ( everytime she says tere utte hai mar jawan gur khake, you can feel the warmth ) Finally after a decade, daresay that Miss Goshal has competiton. The icing is at the far end in the form of a pulsating interlude ( the strains of which are heard right at the start of the song ) leading to a heady climax. Woo-hoo

MAKKHAN MALAI : This song could well been called " kookadookoo " such is the generous usage of this word all through. " Roopvati, kamalavathi, bhanumathi " goes the chorus ( whether it is in reference to the roosters or the kudiyaan is a separate matter ) This is a fun, boisterous song which might be better watched than heard for there is nothing out of the ordinary about the tune itself. While Renu Jagotra is passable, it is Dilbahar with his effortless ' harkat ' ( the second super male voice in this OST ) who impresses.

FARUKHA BAADI : This is a mad film about people mad about food. The song Farukha baadi ( for the clueless it is a city in U.P. North India ) captures this essence of LUV SHUV TEY.. best. The sound of women giggling and a chorus of them singing ( " F.O. main kain diya ghumaake" among other things )  followed by the chhssssshh of mirch-jeera put in oil is it , infectious beats of the tumbi and dhol bolstered further by the distinct vocals of Labh Janjua ( loved him last in ' Hiknaal ' from DEV D ) Yet another situational song which will be a delight to watch.

LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA THEME :  The film DEV D had an instrumental piece- DEV N CHANDA theme ( the whistling one recollects was mesmerising ) which was fab. No such luck here though as this one is fairly average and it hardly registers.

LUNI HASI : ( Male version ) A few weeks back, Amit Trivedi produced the music for an episode of COKE STUDIO and concidentally one of the more popular numbers was a duet ( Nirmohiya ) by Harshdeep Kaur and Devender Singh. So naturally it begs the question. Why not have a duet then of LUNI HASI with them than separate male & female versions? For sure, the thought would have occured to the makers as well. Be that as it may, Devender Singh ( who needs no introduction whatsoever ) adds his own touch to the song. Cannot recall the last time the soundtrack of a film had so many outstanding male singers.

KIKLIKALERDI :  Why is any song reprised ? This reviewer would like to believe that it is with the intention of adding that something more, in other words, the reprise must have repeat value. As it stands, this seems like a watered down version what with Mr Yo Yo being missed sorely.  The only discernible thing here is the brief bit of rapping by Amit Trivedi in the interim ( which reminds one of SUPERCHOR from OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE ) Gotta say that this is an aberration in an otherwise sparkling soundtrack.

With LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA, Amit Trivedi rounds off in inimitable style what has been a dream year for Mr Trivedi ( the wacky AIYYAA, fresh mint like EK MAIN AUR EK TU, the earthy ISHAQZAADE, the sumptuous sounds of ENGLISH VINGLISH )

Highly recommended. Especially for all those (including this reviewer ) still smarting from the shocker that the JAB TAK HAI JAAN soundtrack has turned out to be.
