When one saw Khosla ka Ghosla, one was really excited and entertained and we all hailed Banerjee as the next smartkid on bollywood block. Then came Oye Lucky which confirmed his postion as one of the avante garde directors who experimented with their subjects, giving us movies that were like a breath of fresh air in a warm tepid May afternoon.
Both the movies had a fresh, novel approach to stories that were not big stories, but parts of life being explored through unique eyes. Now here we are, watching Love, Sex, Dhoka and there are people raving, going gaga over the wonderful movie. But hey wait- aren't these stories smell stale? Wasn't this a big thing in 2005? Didn't Dev D cover the MMS angle better, despite a small part of it featuring that but leading to a bigger development in the story and the character.
LSD now, it has its moments of dark humor. The treatment and handling, the fly on the wall documentation, the cinematography all is rah rah excellent. Its web of stories-weaving through incidents and characters, is quite well woven. But where does it all lead to? We are not obsessed with the typical happily ever after ending anymore. As an audience we are growing accustomed to abrupt, zany endings. But the major grouse with this one isn't the ending, it's the ends to which the characters were grabbing after. One doesn't get to see the reasons, the underlying currents behind the characters behavior.
Despite the various camera angles, one doesn't really see those many facets of the characters. The movie leaves you dissatisfied. There's mushy love, there's ample sex, and there's a faint sniff of Dhoka. But that's all that there is. One should expect much better of Banerjee. Maybe he'll get lucky next time.
