Unlike the rewiew by Suyog who has commented from the perspective of someone who has read the book, I am going to critique this movie as purely a movie goer. I have seen all the 3 parts, and this one impresses the least.

To summarize this movie, this is seems like a movie that could have been done by Boney Kapoor (overcrowded story, zillion unwanted scenes) in cahoots with the Wachovski Brothers(big budget, confused story line, confused sequel) and the best of Hollywood animation.

The movie is a great effort ... true. The graphics are stunning . I read somewhere that some of the scenes took 3200 processors nearly 2 minutes to render. The sets are grand, the costumes are authentic and the battle scenes are jaw dropping. Some of the scenes like the Frodo battling the giant spider and the mega-elephants rampaging through the army is mind blowing ....

thats about the only positive aspects of this movie.

The rest of it sucks. The movie is long winded.(210 minutes). It is sad. There are many unwanted scenes of the characters dying in other ppls arms and a lots of tears shedded. You just wish they would get on with it. I wanted the bumbling Fredo to get rid of the damn ring or jump into the Volcano himself.

Speaking of ends ... this movie lacks a crisp ending. There are 4 climaxes. Just when you think this is the end of the story, there is another scene. I agree that long sagas like this should have a happy ending, but this movie takes the cake. It shows the happy endings of all the characters in their individual story lives. Who gets married, who has kids and what not.

I left with the feeling that Sauron should have won .... that would have kept the movie short and crisp.

I am writing this review within an hour of stepping out of the cineplex. So it appears a little harsh. However, you be your own judge. Dont troop into the theatre with the masses just because its the right thing to do ..... ITS NOT. Apart from the graphics, this movie is one long winded, boring and sorry excuse for a sequel. Read the book .or watch the DVD ... that way you get to control the pace of the story.
