My review of the famous story "Lord Jim". Review on Lord Jim - Joseph Conrad

When I will think about a story one of the stories came to my mind is of Jim, an English noble man lived in the 17 th century England.Jim was born in the family of an English aristocrat. His father was a top employee in the palace.He was one among the five sons of his father and mother. His house was in an English country side which was a beautiful place near the hills.When he was a boy, he have the dreams of becoming a sailor and visit far places and adventure. After finishing is studies in the Navy school, he had got an assignment in a passenger ship as assistant to the captain. When the ship was about to set sail, his father told to his son only one thing, "my son, a single bad act can destroy a man, s life, do not do anything you know is wrong". These words have far reaching consequences in the life of jim as his story came to an end after more than 25 years.

On one midnight when he was standing in the deck of the ship which was sailing calmly through the pacific,  one assistant told him in a horrific voice, the ship is going to sink, we are going in the life boat, are you coming or not. Jim was terrified and he knows that there are nearly 700 passengers in the ship and there are very few life boats in the ship.The sailor told jim, all passengers are sleeping dont awake them, let us go.He told him It is his duty to be in ship and his commitment.Then the sailor and 6 crews had downed a rescue boat and 6 crews are sitting in the water and he shouted to other men in the boat"have a last look at the hero-Jim the bravest hero". Jim was very afraid and he told them, wait he is also coming and he had joined them in the boat.The sailor told him before that the vessel's engine room is full of water and within hours it will sink to the ocean depths.After reaching the nearest port in the far east, he came to know that, a  French commercial vessel had towed the ship to the nearest port and the captain of the liner complained to the authorities about the crew in the abandoned ship. All his companions had fled the port by knowing this, Jim was caught by the authorities and tried in the court and the judge stripped his degree in sailing and he cannot work in a ship anymore as punishment.When he was outside the court he heard two sailors are saying about him by pointing to an old and sick dog lying in a corner. One man said to another "look poor dog it is injured and cannot walk"Jim asked him"what did you say about me?

Remember an injured and old dog can bite", and he walked away.After spending there some more time by doing odd jobs in town Jim came to be in friendly with a rich man called marlowe. At one pont, in a park, when they were sitting, he tol jim, "look at that butterfly, it is silent and sitting still, we should emulate a butterfly". Then he gave the address of a small king in a distant county or village in malaysia and gave a letter to him to get a job there.Jim had gone there very far and presented the letter to the king, the place is called - patusan.The small king assigned him a job in his military and protecting his son.Jim told him, when you find I cannot fulfill my promises offered by you, you can do anything you want with me, that was his word, a true word of an english aristrat.During his stay in a small house in the village, he knows that his neighbouring house, there a beautiful girl called jewel is living with her stepfather and he is torturing her by beating for marriying his friend. Jewel dont like his friend and dont want to marry him. One night Jewel ran to Jim's house and take shelter there. He fell in love with her shortly after and after he told her " come with me to night and you will not return to him.

Nobody in this world will take you from me". She told him" but I am afraid, you will leave me one day like my father did before". He calmed her and loved her and married her. He have a servant in his house, a malaysian boy. After months the king told him, some pirates had attacked the people from the ocean and they are there and Jim should go with the soldiers to capture the pirate leader and pirates or kill them.When he had gone armed with the soldiers he found that It was Brown, the notorious pirate leader and his gangeu, they know each other. Jim always worried about his past and brown knows his past well.The war took place and the pirates were defeated and surrounded in a small place.After days, brown told him" we are trapped like rats, give us food or a clear path to the seas"Jim repied"Brown what did you deserve for your past, innumerable murders, rapes, robberies"brown told him " yes I agree and what did you deserve for your past? Jim told him, yes I defeated you can go the seas. After unexpectedly, brown shot the king's son and fled with his gangue to the seas in their vessel.The king' son is dead, the duty of Lord Jim is sabotaged, he defeated yet again. He returned to his house and told Jewel ".

I am going I cannot keep my words I had once again lost in my life" and turned to the servant and told him " take care of Jewel I am going" Jewel told him " but you promised me, you will not leave me, wait we can run away we can live some where" she is weeping .Jim told her" there is no where to go, there is nowhere to run away". He had walked to the king's palace through the village and told him in the durbar, when the king was sitting in the throne"I cannot keep my words, I was failed in my responsibilities, as I promised I am here. The king arose and with two guns in both his hands, and fired a shot in Jim's chest with one gun. Jim fell down dead and when he fell in the gound, an iron finger ring which was wore in the finger of the king's son rolled slowly towards the feet of the king and remaned there silently still.The story about the English noble man in the seventeenth century are echoing in my heart after I had read it before fourteen years.

I cannot forget the idea, virtue, nobility, dignity, honour, pride, this story try to say.
