Mumbai would definately be incomplete without the local trains, specially the virar fast, be it western railway, central or harbour.
I have used all and though not comfortable it is fast and helps in saving a lot of time, last week I decided to drive to my cousins place at andheri from marine lines and I completely regret it, it took me 2 and a half hours,
The traffic was terrible and frustrating, a local train would have barely taken 40 minutes.local train fares are cheap, specially for those who travel everyday can get a monthly, quaterly or yearly pass, the first class s much better than the second class, advisable to take a first class pass....
However there are certain major drawbacks, the crowd is used to pushing each other, every year hundreds of people have bad accidents, and also crossing of railway tracks should be banned, there should be more guards or police...safety measures are a must.
Thousands of people rely on local trains, the train network is just amazing....railways should clean the trains everynight, i often see bad stains and horrible seats...the maintenance should improve, but overall its definately recommended, trains are anyday better and faster...just be safe and advise others too...
