SHE'S a latter-day version of the good `ole gosh-gee-whiz bimbette. In the case of Marilyn Monroe, gentlemen did prefer blondes, didn't they? And so, there you go around the romance-in- trouble bush again, what with a rather bubble-headed girl determined to prove that she doesn't just want to have fun. First-time director Luketic's Legally Blonde is occasionally funny, often charming, and is enlivened by a thoroughly uninhibited performance by Witherspoon whom you might remember from Pleasantville (1998). Utterly outgoing and a natural with her sense of comic timing, the actress seems to be having a whale of a time while slipping into the character of Elle Woods. She's pretty well-heeled, mercifully, instead of being one of those self-pitying orphan Annies. Moreover, she's friendly, zestful and is often dolled up in shocking pink Prada outfits. And yes, of course she's a blonde to boot. The 25-year-old flashy duckling, however, must turn into a super- intelligent swan when her love life is threatened. The trouble is that her bio-data has little to boast of and a lot to be embarrassed about - like an appearance in a Ricky Martin pop video. Never mind. Unembarrassed, she gains admission to Harvard in order to secure a law degree, and thereby win back the affections of her beau (Davis). Incidentally, the guy has heavy-duty political ambitions which compel him to gravitate towards a more presentable, sedate and serious companion (Selma Blair). Now the wings of the `other woman' must be clipped before it's too late. Smartly scripted and peppered with giggle-inducing gags, the film alas doesn't even cast a cursory glance at the darker side of a situation where a young woman must willy-nilly live up to the expectations of a chauvinistic male. Perhaps, delving even a little deeper into the uneven aspects of a romantic triangle world would have ruined the fantasy-prone, feel-good mood of the picture. Hence, you have to appreciate the frantic antics of the Blondie on the law campus for what they are. Like a strawberry milkshake, this movie is sweet and frothy while it lasts.
