Led zeppelin had burst on the scene with shrieks and shredding vocals that most of the britney spears and backstreet boys fans identify as ''just noise''.
I always point out to these people who say rock is ''noise'' that much against their beliefs, millions of people really do NOT like to listen to ''noise''. Think about it, its logical.
There is a complexity to progressive rock that perhaps one finds hard to find soothing or sweet. IMHO, one should keep in mind that not all emotions are sweet and soft, why should then, an expression of emotion, be sweet and soft in order to be judged good?
A better way of judging how good a music is (yes, A music), is by arriving at some degree of complexity about it. In that sense, it is a science. And complexity is best judged by musicians. And that is why so many amateur guitarists (bathroom guitarists?? ) are quick to fall in love with this stuff and other forms of a music that goes beyond the three chord structure of pop and other elevator music.
Enough raving and ranting. This album is awesome! It revealed the acoustic side of this band. Beautiful work like ''tangerine'' and ''friends'' is complimented by the riffs of ''immigrant song''. I somehow think this album has been given less attention especially after the fourth one took off. (In fact, stairway to heaven is rated quite lowly by the band members themselves, they call it a wedding song).
Definitely one of the best albums the band has released!
Rock on!
