Driving can be a lot of fun and also can be a necessity, but on the other hand it can be dangerous so know what you are doing well before attempting to go out on the road.

There are many classes available to first time drivers with a trained instructor. By taking the course you also get a reduction on your insurance rate.

I learned by having my mom teach me. We started out in a park where there were not many people and a lot of space to move around in. No matter who teaches you, listen to them and don't think you know more than they do. Never drive in traffic until you are well prepared. You can cause an accident or be in one very easily that way. I suggest a place where there aren't many people such as a parking lot when the shops are closed.

There are two kinds of cars. An automatic which is the easier of the two to learn to drive as you only need be concerned with two floor petals. A standard has the addition of a clutch so you have 3 petals to learn to use. I first learned on an automatic and then a standard so that I would be able to drive either kind.

Before attempting to drive make sure you test your brakes to ensure they are in proper working order. Other things you will want to check even as an expereinced driver before setting out is to make sure all lights work, your emergency brake, your horn and your directional signals. Be sure and wear your seat belt. Check all positioning of mirrors inside the car to make sure you have a clear view of what is along side you and behind you. This is just a good routine to get in to help keep you safe.

You will want to check your tires also to make sure they have enough air, if not put some in. Also always carry a spare tire with you.

Even though many things are not done so much anymore you should learn them anyway such as hand signals in case your directionals should fail to work.

Most people these days park in parking lots but you do need to know how to park on the street as sometimes that is all that is available.

Always keep your gas tank full as you get better performance this way and check all your fluids such as your oil, brake fluid, washer fluid and be sure your windshield wipers work properly.

Do not use a cell phone when driving unless you have a device to hold it for you, you need both hands on the wheel, if you must make a call pull over and do so and be safe. They are great to have with you for emergencies but other than that I do not advise you to use them while driving.

Be cautious when driving but keep up with the flow of the traffic and never ride someones bumper cus if they stop quick you are going to run into them.

Obey all road signs, they are there for a good reason.

Just use common sense and driving will become something enjoyable.
