More air and less chips is what you get when you buy Lays packet of chips.
I saw in the bakery a big packet of Lays Chips... I thought it would be enough for a big family... The size made me think that it could be at least 1/2 kg (it looked bigger than the surf washing powder packet which I bought from the same shop) .... I felt it is very economical for Rs. 20/-.
I got a shock of my life after opening the packet... 3/4 th OF THE PACKET WAS EMPTY !!! The first thought that came to my mind was that the shopkeeper had cheated me... but then my friend said the packet was always like that... I had actually never bought such a big packet and whenever I had bought a small packet, I had put my hand into the cover of chips in the darkness of the cinema hall ... so possibly I never observed the quantity !
If my calculation is correct then at this rate.... 1 kg of Lays cost Rs. 222 compared to Rs. 140 for ordinary one.
So are they really cheating ?
Well no and yes !
No because they have put behind the packet as per regulation .... that it contains only 90 g !!!
Yes because they have made nontranparent huge packet making a consumer believe that the quantity contained in packet is four times than what it actually contains !!
Legally I am not sure if someone can take action against them, but some years back a similar gimmick was made by a toothpaste company by making a huge outer packet for its toothpaste and the rival company had taken it to court and made them resize their packets.
We have to wait and see if someone is going to take them to court over this issue... but they have surely trend the set for fooling people as I find many other new brands have started using the same techniques !
I believe people would still buy their product even if they had packed in a trasparent package or at least a semi transparent one (for people to see the quantity) if they believe their product is really tasty.
As for taste.... I do agree that is does taste good.
I heard that a malayalam magazine had some article on the ill-effects of eating Lays... well I am yet to see that....
