Laxminarayan Institute of technology is in Nagpur and one of the oldest institutes for Chemical Engineering in India. Thousand of students of this institute are today engaged in various functions of industries all over the country and abroad. I am lucky enough to get a chance to complete my chemical engineering from this institute. Let me write few line about the institute.
History –
The LAXMINARAYAN INSTITUTE popularly known as LIT, owes its existence to the generous donation of Late RAO BAHADUR D.LAXMINARAYAN. LIT covers about 78 acres of land and functioning to impart technological knowledge to the nation since 1942. This is one of oldest engineering collages in India and may be the first in Central India.
Location –
On the outskirts of the city of Nagpur, Winter Capital of Maharashtra, magnificent building of LIT stand tall on the top a hillock. It is one of the famous landmark of the city of Nagpur overlooking the busy Bombay-Calcutta national highway. Nagpur is not only winter capital of Maharashtra but also nerve center of Vidharva. It is also known as California of India because of its famous oranges.
Nagpur in connected to rest of the country by Rail, Air and Road. All trains going to south or west or east or north stop at Nagpur junction, earlier managed by BNR.
Courses –
Four-Year Degree course in Chemical Engineering leading to B. Tech Degree
Four-Year Degree course in Chemical Technology leading to B. Tech Degree in the branches like - Technology of Oils / Fats / Surfactants / Food Technology, Petroleum Refining and Petrochemical Technology, Plastic and Polymer Technology, Surface Coating Technology, Pulp and Paper technology.
A three semester post-graduation degree course leading to M.Tech. degree in Chemical Engineering and few other related branches.

Short descriptions about the various departments of LIT
- CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT:
Department of Chemical Engineering first started in the year 1942 to serve the chemical industries. This department has also pioneered research in many fields of chemical engineering like wastewater treatment, computational fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, etc. LIT produces about 65 engineers every year of which maximum get absorbed in the industries while some opt for further studies in India and Abroad.
PLASTICS AND POLYMERS: Plastic and Polymer technology department of L.I.T was started in year 1995 and the newest department with 10 seats.
OIL FATS AND SURFACTANTS TECHNOLOGY: The department of oil technology started in 1942 with 10 seats. This is one of most respected departments of LIT.
PULP AND PAPER TECHNOLOGY: The Department of Pulp and Paper came into existence with the view to cater the ever increasing needs of cellulose based industries in general and pulp and paper industries in particular in the year 1976 in this institute with 10 seats.
FOOD TECHNOLOGY: Department of food technology was established in the year 1971 with 10 seats. Being one of the oldest facility to serve food industries it has its own reputation.
PETROLEUM REFINING AND PETROCHEMICAL AND TECHNOLOGY: This Department was also established in the year 1971 to impart education to 10 students.
COMPUTER LABORATORY: The Computer Laboratory started in the year 1992 to increase computational ability. It consists of high performance computers with internet facility free for the students. I have not seen this department but heard lot about it.
Placement – I passed out in 1981 and in those days placement service was not that good. Present management seems to be quite active to invite industries for campus interviews. Members of LIT’s alumni association in New Bombay also helps students to get absorbed in industries. This alumni association is headed by one of the most popular and respected retired professor.
HOSTELS:
Since long LIT has got two hostels (old & New) each accommodating about 100 students. The hostel facilities include mess, recreational and sports facilities like soccer, cricket, indoor badminton court table tennis etc. I spent very memorable four years in those hostels. Swimming pool and big enough auditorium are the main attractions. There are many private hostels in the near vicinity of the college.
