Dear MSians,

This is my Silver Jublee review at MS and I am proud to present the review of my most favorite movie with this.

Today I am not planning to do a regular review… rather, it will be my narration of the movie. Please do leave your messages.

The lead characters in this movie are Viren (Anil Kapoor), Pallavi (Sridevi – the mother), Pooja (Sridevi – the daughter), Prem (Anupam Kher), Taija (Waheeda rehman), Siddharth and Anita.

The story of Lamhe has been told several times at MS and the performances have been unanimously acclaimed. I am not going to add much to it.

Here is my narration through the title song of the movie… Yeh lamhe yeh pal hum….

Ye Lamhe Ye Pal Hum Barso Yaad Karenge

Yes,… for years, shall we remember these beautiful moments and cherish the wonderful memory called Lamhe.

It is not Viren alone who cherishes the moments spent with Pallavi…. It is not Pooja alone, who cherishes every single gift and every single piece of information on her beloved Kunwarji…. We all cherish every moment, through which Yash Chopra made us fee wonderful through this extraordinary movie of his.

Ye Mausam Chale Gaye To Hum Fariyad Karenge

The “mausham of love” had to go. Viren could not stand the separation of his love. He did not know that his heart was clapping with one hand. He kept on saving the small small belongings of his beloved Pallavi, as if he was treasuring the precious “lamhe” of love.

But alas… he did not know of Pallavi’s affection towards Siddharth. The season of love went off when Pallavi brushed aside the extended hands of Viren to run into the arms of Siddharth.

lekin chahate hue bhi fariyaad nahin kar paayaa Viren. Viren could not complain to anyone… how could he? He never put a precondition with his heart that Pallavi also had to love him!!!

In Sanson Ki Tasveero Se

Every person had an image in his/ her breath. Viren had preserved the image of Pallavi… but he was caught unaware when that changed into Pooja. Pooja had the same image of Viren, but she did not know when the person she adored had become her love in life.

In Yaadon Ki Jangeero Se

And every person was a prisoner of his or her own past. Viren and Pooja were prisoners in the hands of their one side love… Taija was a prisoner in her affection between her two children, who were not hers…. And Prem….. he was a prisoner in the hands of his devoted friendship. He scarified his life for giving a shoulder to cry on.

But what did each of them got? Pain? Rejection? Sufferings????

Apne Dil Ko Kaise Hum Azaad Karenge

This is a question that each one of them kept on asking. But there was no answer to that. Probably it comes from another basic human tendency to keep on holding to one’s sufferings.

Viren refused to come out of the sorrow of the past. As Prem pointed out, “ Ye aisa aadmi hai ke khushi uska ghar ka pataa poochhe to woh paas wale ka pataa bataa detaa hai”.

Pooja refused to give in to the fact that she was like a daughter to Viren. The debate between Pooja and Anita in the climax was clear enough to indicate what Pooja’s feelings were. (Extremely well written dialogues).

Prem refused to leave Viren alone and go. He had a way to find a lighter moment for every serious situation. When Prem wanted to stop him from coming, he refused and when Viren wanted him to go back…. I will never firget that scene… A tight slap, followed by a statement, “ Tu samajhta kyaa hai aapne aap ko? God? Almighty? Ke tune ishaaraa kiyaa aur logon ki zindagiyaan palat gayee?”

And poor Taijaan… how could she set herself free from the past when the entire future of two of her most beloved people were in danger?

Ye Mausam Chale Gaye To Hum Fariyad Karenge

Ye Lamhe To Hai Bahut Hasin

Each moment that Viren spent with Pallavi… from the moment he saw on the ladder singing “Megha re Megha” to the trip in the deserts of Rajasthan with the high point…. The song… Morni,…. Baagaa maa bole aadhi raat maa… each moment was wort treasuring.

And Pooja… each item that she preserved of her Kunwarji, each moment she spent longing for her, her futile chase, picnic in London, singing parody songs at home, trying to look like Viren…. She lived every moment as if it was the last moment.

In Lamho Par Kuch Likha Nahin

No one knew what was there in any of the moments. But for every such moment, the reaction of Prem (read as the performance of Anupam Kher) was classic.

Did Viren expect Pooja to be identical to her mother? Prem explains this saying, “ Upparwalla ka sense of humour bhi sick hotaa jaa rahaa hai

Did anyone expect Pooja to fall in love with Viren?

Did Pooja expect to find out that the picture that Viren had drawn was not hers, rather her mother’s?

These moments are like blank pages… no one knows what will be written on them.

Ye Aabaad Karenge

They may teach you to live life, a life full of meaning… like Prem’s or Taija’s. They may have sacrifised everything… but they lived a life of satisfaction.

Ya Barbaad Karenge

They may ruin one person totally also. Viren lost twenty precious years of his live trapped in the no won situation.

Probably it would have destroyed the lives of Viren and Pooja also, had it not been for Prem.

And why not? If Viren had realized that the image in his memory had been replaced by Pooja and no more it was Pallavi, what was wrong for him to marry Pooja?

The argument between Pooja and Anita was clear enough indication to establish that Viren was actually not in love with Anita. He was marrying her as he wanted to run away.

The best part of the movie was probably the argument between Prem and Viren. Where Prem establishes the fact and clears the doubts on the question of legitimacy of the relationship between Viren and Pooja.

After all what was the relationship between Pooja and Viren? It is not true if Viren said that Pooja was Pallavi’s daughter. Pooja was Pallavi and Siddharth Bhattnagar’s daughter. And what was Pallavi of Viren? Nothing. Viren’s heart was trying to clap with one hand.

Ye Mausam Chale Gaye To Hum Fariyad Karenge

I wish, I will never let go the pleasure of watching Lamhe. I cherish each moment of this movie, especially the performances of Anupam Kher, Sridevi, Waheeda Rehman and Anil Kapur.

Ye Lamhe Ye Pal Hum Barso Yaad Karenge

I will remember the movie for the phenomenal dialogues.

I will remember the movie for the characterization of Prem… the clown, the thinker, the serious person, the friend, the moderator…

I will remember the movie for the scenery and locales from Rajasthan Deserts to Switzerland. I will remember the music and song picturization, especially the parody song and morni baagaa maa bole aadhi raatmaa.
