Lamaur International has been a company that produces products for the professional market for many years. They manufacture perms, shampoos and other hair care products to be sold in beauty supply stores and used in hair salons. Back in the 1970s this product line was extremely popular and was in nearly every salon as their preferred brand of products.

I can remember going to visit my hairdresser and she would have bottles of Apple Pectin Shampoo Concentrate at her washing stations with a giant plunger on top. I can vividly remember the wonderful fragrance of fresh apples filling the air when she washed my hair after giving me a perm or before cutting my hair. It became a very popular shampoo and most households that wanted a good professional brand of shampoo in their household would purchase Apple Pectin Concentrate Shampoo.

Lets fast forward to the 1980s where other brands started to hit the market such as Paul Mitchell and Sebastian. Soon those newer brands started to take favor in households because they were something new and different to use as salon brands. Bit by bit, people started to forget about their beloved Apple Pectin Concentrate Shampoo.

One day, about 2 years ago I started to feel a bit of nostalgia and was shopping in my local Sally Beauty Supply and saw a 1 liter bottle of this shampoo sitting on the shelf. I opened the top and it smelled just like I remembered it all those years ago. For the liter bottle it was only $10, which compared to the $50 Goldwell line and others it felt like a complete bargain. I snatched up the bottle and went on my merry way home.

I notice that since the previous time I had purchased Apple Pectin many years ago, they have the original formula (the one I purchased where the shampoo is white) and a more moisturizing pink formula.

Back in the 70s and 80s the bottle was shorter and had a plunger on the top, now it is just a tall liter bottle with a flip top lid to squeeze out the shampoo. I wish they would bring back their plunger bottles.

Performance:

I washed my hair with this shampoo and it became very bouncy and shiny. It smells so good and exactly the same as I remember it as a child. It does not weigh down my fine straight hair and styling is much easier. I feel this shampoo is a bargain because it is so concentrated you only need a very tiny amount to get a good lather. This is unlike drug store shampoo brands where it takes a lot to build lather on your scalp. I have had this bottle of Apple Pectin for nearly 2 years now. I rotate it with a few other shampoos and I would say the bottle is about 1/3 remaining. If you were to use it exclusively I would say a bottle would last a single person about a year or more. I love that this shampoo contains no cones (dimithecone, or anything ending in “cone”) so it does not build up on your hair. I did notice however, that their conditioner does so I will not purchase that. This review is for the original formula of shampoo only. When I wash my hair I can even skip a day after and not worry about it getting greasy at the roots. It does not strip my scalp to the point of becoming itchy either. I can use this daily without issue if I wish to. I find this works as well if not better than many of the new salon brands at about half the price.
