Lakshya stars Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani in the main roles. The music is by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and the movie is directed by Farhan Akhtar, whose first film, DCH was a huge hit in the metros atleast, thereby creating huge expectations for this movie.

The story deals with the confusions which go young people go through when they do not know what they want to do in their life. Hrithik is one such guy who is rich and has got it all but doesn't quite know and is not able to decide what is his ambition. His father, Boman Irani is always behind him to take up the family business or do something worthwhile in life. He has a girlfriend, Preity Zinta believes that one day, he will find his calling, his Lakshya. He applies to the army, which irks his dad who orders him to join the business which he runs. He refuses, joins the army and deserts it after seeing the hardships, which in turn causes his girl friend to break up with him. How he goes back to the army and finds his calling, forms the rest of the story. The movie moves back and forth between the army scenes and his life in Delhi in the first half and the latter half concentrates on the outbreak of the war and how Hrithik matures during the course of the war.

Performances:

Hrithik initially as the confused person in the first half and as the army guy, in the second half, impresses. The look of perpetual confusion on his face on note being able to decide what to do with his life, is earnest and sincere. Equally good is his transformation to the mature army person. I personally am not his big admirer, but this is one movie, where he shines through. Preity Zinta was good in the first half as the college student, but in the second half when she covers the war, she was not convincing. All she did was try to romance Hrithik or go into flash back. Amitabh Bachchan is very good as the army officer and his role, though small, is important. Boman Irani's role was very small, but one scene where father and son talk over the phone, is worth having him in the film. The support cast of the movie is very good and they support the film efficiently.

Technically, the film is good. Direction by Farhan Akhtar is excellent. Making a serious film after the first film, a comedy was a good hit, takes some guts and Farhan has come out well. Music, by the trio is good though not comparable to Dil Chahta Hai.But then I dont think they will ever be able to create the DCH magic again. Background music is nice and gels with the mood of the movie. As usual Hrithik's dancing is excellent. Special metion about the cinematography. It is first rate. One of the best seen in recent times. The war scenes, the serene mountains, the raging waters, all were spectacularly shot. The movie succeeds where movies like LOC had failed. This movie, has extensive war scenes, but the strategic details are brought out more and there is not much bad mouthing in the movie. The climax, especially the mountain climbing scene, is fantastic, with a wonderful guitar playing in the background.

Some good scenes:

  1. The Scene where the father and the son converse before the start of the war (the best one)

  2. The Scene where, Hrithik mentions his Lakshya to Preity Zinta.

  3. The Scene in which the soldier shouts at Preity in the hospital

Apart from them, the movie has many other watchable moments. The film as a whole is a good movie which shows the transformation of a young man to a mature person. I personally did not understand why this film did not do better at the B.O, but hey you never know what the people think :). Farhan Akhtar passed the test with this movie and proved that he is no one film wonder. Overall this movie is given a very big Thumbs Up :)
