Aimless watching Lakshya. Review on Lakshya

Lakshya… the word is Lakshya. Farhan Akhtar’s new flick about a guy who finds himself after 24 years and 18000 feet (or was it 18 years and 24000 feet). Till about three and a half hour’s back I was pretty excited about holding the tickets to the first day first show ticket of the hottest movie around… but what happened inside the hall was a complete showdown.

Unlike Farhan’s first film Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya lacks the freshness in the storyline and has made a complete mess of itself trying to rope in everything- emotions, a love affair, melodrama, lunatics and a lot of action at the warfront and yet does not manage to sustain the excitement with which the movie lovers entered the hall.

The Movie : The movie has nothing new to offer but for those who have not seen both LoC and Dil Chahta Hai…. Because the movie is a mixture of the two subjects. One finds a striking similarity between the Akash (Amir Khan) of DCH and Karan Shergill (Hrithik Roshan) of Lakshya while he is in his college days… both unsure of themselves and their future just spending time aimlessly.

The twist comes when Karan decides to join the army against his father’s wishes played by Boman Irani. One expected some light moments when Boman came in the scene but surprisingly he has a very serious role in the film . Only a few scenes here and there elicit some laughter otherwise the movie seems a complete drag in the first half. First half is mainly flashback where Karan posted at Kargil remembers of his college days and the days at IMA and his break up with Romila Dutt alias Romi (Preity Zinta).

The scenes of his college days bring a little respite from the boring and thousand times before heard lectures on both patriotism and the trust of the great population of India on is army because of which they are able to sleep at rest in their homes which dominated the screen for the first 45 minutes or so of the film.

The second half is nothing but LoC revisited and I wouldn’t be surprised if some scenes were directly picked up from J.P.Dutta’s venture as one could hardly make out the difference. Only the last half an hour which has an amazingrock climbing sequence revives the interest in the movie.

Performances:

Hrithik was good… he played both the characters of a lost college going guy and a responsible army officer pretty well. But in the role of his college days one can’t help but notice shades of his nerdy character in Koi Mil Gaya.

Amitabh Bachchanwas cold plus his screen presence was very short.

Boman Irani who had made us laugh our wits off in Munnabhai and Mai Hoon Na was unreasonably put in such a serious and non important role. In short he was wasted.

Preity Zinta’s performance was again good but then she had not much of a role to play as well. Her hairdo was either too whacko or too ahead for my fashion sense to appreciate.

Others The supprting cast gave a good performance but their roles were too short to take notice of.

Songs: My friends tell me that my taste of music is very poor so I would request you to not take what I have to say in this section very seriously.

All the tracks except for the title track and “Mai Aisa Kyuon Hoon” were boring and one could conveniently sleep through them though none of them broke the very slow pace of the movie as such.

In the end all I would have to say is go watch the film but don’t have much expectations from it.
