These days,many choreographers are turning into directors and some of them are being successful. Take Farah Khan`s ?Main Hoon Na?, for instance. Another talented choreographer who has now turned into a film director is Ahmed Khan. His first film as a director is ?Lakeer?. Choreographers can also be successful directors, however, in Ahmed Khan`s case, his film fails miserably. The film had been making news, since, quite a time ago and finally, it has released. After it`s release, you feel that there is something which went wrong with this film.
THE FILM:
?Lakeer?, directed by Ahmed Khan, stars Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, Sohail Khan, John Abraham, Nauheed Cyrusi, Apoorva Agnihotri, Vrajesh Hirjee and Raj Zutshi. This film has a good starcast, and an excellent team to work with, for a debutante director, however the film lacks something, terribly.
THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:
1.Arjun Rana(Sunny Deol):Arjun Rana, is someone who is respected by everyone and also feared by everyone. He is rich and powerful. Whenever it is his birthday the whole country celebrates it. The only thing which can melt his heart is his brother, Karan but his brother Karan can also make him stone-hearted, at times. Sunny Deol gets the most scope in this film to perform and he does an excellent job. He shouts, he screams-just the way we love him. After such a long time, he seems to be interested in a movie,otherwise in his recent releases he seemed to be there to earn money,and that`s all.
2.Sanju(Suniel Shetty):Sanju is a car mechanic who respects Arjun Rana, very much and dreams of being like him, one day, but what`s important for him than his dream is his brother Saahil, who is the apple of his eye.Suniel Shetty doesn`t get much lengthy role and doesn`t appear so frequently, however he also lives his character and does a wonderful job.His new look with those lens in his eyes and a fancy tattoo on his right arm, will be appreciated by the viewers.
3.Karan(Sohail Khan):Karan is Arjun Rana`s younger brother. He is rich and gets whatever he wants in life.He is a complete spoilt brat never loses anything. Sohail Khan is fine, in his role, but sometimes he looks too funny, because of the face expressions he makes. You will definitely laugh at his face expressions. (I laughed out loud,a lot:) Also, this guy needs to work over his smile. He needs to have an orginal smile, rather than that one which is copied from Salman Khan. After all, that kind of smile suits Salman Khan, only. In light moments, Sohail does a decent job.
4.Saahil(John Abraham):Saahil is Sanju`s younger brother and also the dearest thing to his brother. Saahil is very different from the rest of the students in his college. He is simple and not arrogant like Karan or Ronni,two guys in his college. John Abraham, disappoints you a lot in this film. He is completely expressionless this time around. There is one scene where Karan makes fun of his emotions and Karan`s friend Ronni laughs at him that he carries 50 bucks in his pocket. In that scene, he is completely expressionless, with only tears flowing from his eyes. He looks drunk in that scene-half smiling and half crying. This is not the case in only one particular scene, he is like this in the whole movie.
5.Bindiya(Nauheed Cyrusi):Bindiya is a happy-go-lucky kind of a girl. She happens to be Arjun Rana`s siter but not Karan`s sister. (Confused?I will tell later). She has a very positive thinking and is always afraid of all these killings and fights which take place due to Arjun Rana. Nauheed Cyrusi has improved a lot over her previous performances but she still, needs to polish up her acting skills. Also, she should work a little bit on her dialogue delivery because at places I couldn`t understand what she was saying,as she was speaking so fast.
Apoorva Agnihotri(after such a long time!!!) as Ronni does his job fairly well. At times he gets irritating but that`s what his role demanded. Vrajesh Hirjee again looks and acts like a strange creature from the outer space. Raj Zutshi has no dialogues at all,except for 2 or 3 lines (thankfully), so can`t comment much on him.
THE STORY:
Once, a person called Suraj Rana adopted an orphan child and named him Arjun Rana. He adopted Arjun Rana to do his work and adopt the same profession as his. Suraj Rana was a don and so is Arjun Rana.Arjun Rana got all he wanted and never did his Suraj Rana refused to give him anything. Suraj Rana has a son of his own, Karan. He didn`t want Karan to follow his or Arjun`s path, which means being a don, so now Karan is Arjun`s responsibility.
Arjun loves Karan dearly. If anyone even thinks of harming Karan, Arjun kills that person down. Another responsibility of Arjun Rana is Bindiya. Bindiya`s father was Suraj Rana`s fiend who committed suicide for his sake, so Bindiya was then brought at Suraj Rana`s home. On the other hand, there is a car mechanic called Sanju, who dreams of being like Arjun Rana but his brother Saahil, is more important to him. Sanju works very hard to make his brother get educated in a college, where rich people study, so Saahil does study there.
There, Saahil falls in love with Bindiya and one day he takes a card for her. Unfortunately, Karan also loves Bindiya so he warns Saahil to stay away from Bindiya. Karan`s frien Ronni makes fun of his emotions infront of the whole college. A heart-broken Saahil gets mad and beats himself a lot that he ends up being unconscious. When Sanju, looks at him, he thinks that Ronni, had beaten him up. Sanju, with his gang goes to the college and mistakenly beats up Karan, thinking that he is Ronni. Karan is severely beaten and goes to the hospital. When Arjun Rana gets to know this, all hell breaks loose as he decides to take revenge from the one, who did this all.
THE WORK OF THE CREW:
Ahmed Khan`s,direction is plain mediocre.He could have done more justice to this film and the film had the potential to be a memorable one,or at least passable one but NO!Many scenes are unintentionally funny and stupid.
