The best by A.R.Rahman so far!. Review on Lagaan Songs

Lagaan is a very good movie, but the music is even better. You must have observed many times that a film becomes a hit if it has good songs, but if the songs are not good, then the film is likely to flop. Take for instance, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai; it was a good movie but became a super hit because of its music.

Lagaan's music is composed by A.R.Rahman, whereas the lyrics are by Javed Akhtar. The music is very typical to A.R.Rahman's previous works. The songs sound good only after repeated hearing.

SIDE A

1.Ghanan Ghanan: The first song in the album is Ghanan Ghanan. The song is more of a request to the clouds to pour rain (Kaale megha, kaale megha, paani to barsao). The lyrics of the song are good. But the song starts to get old after hearing many times.

2.Mitwa: This is probably the best song in the album. The music is very good, as well as the https://lyrics. They perfectly match the situation that is there in the movie. The song has been choreographed well by Ganesh Hegde.

3.Radha Kaise Na Jale: After Mitwa, this is the 2nd best track in the album, sung exceptionally well by Asha Bhosale and Udit Narayan. It will not take enough time for you to understand that Gauri (Gracy Singh) is jealous of the Elizabeth (Shelley). The lyrics are very good, and Javed Akhtar has done a good job by taking the example of Radha and Kanhaiya in this song. The music of the song is very good, but the final few notes of the song sound as if they have been derived from the famous song 'Jab Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya' from the movie Mughal-e-Azam. The music too sounds very modern.

4.Lagaan...: This song is just plain music. The music, though, is very good. But I can't exactly recollect when this music was played.

SIDE B

1.O Rey Chori: This song is a bit slow, but the music is soothing. It has been sung quite well by both Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. The lyrics of the song are pretty simple, and not many instruments have been used in the song. The song also has a verse in English that has been sung quite well by Vasundhra Das. The music has been composed quite carefully, to see that it doesn't sound as two different songs.

2.Chale Chalo: A very good song with matching music. The song is full of josh and talks about the villagers' determination to defeat the British. The lyrics are superb, and the song has been sung exceptionally well A.R.Rahman, himself. The rhythm and music match the josh of the song. I don't think that anybody else would have been able to sing it better than A.R.Rahman. The picturisation of the song in the movie is very good.

3.Waltz for A Romance: A.R.Rahman has composed this piece very well. It has been played well on the piano.

4.O Paalanhaare: The song is mostly a prayer asking Him to help them out. It has been sung well by Lata Mangeshkar. The music is very light.

ANALYSIS

Overall, the album is very good. There are just 5 songs, one prayer song, and two music pieces. There are 2 reasons for that: - 1) The movie is already long, and songs would have made it longer. 2) The songs should perfectly fit in the movie, and should not distract the audience's attention, by putting in songs unnecessarily.

The uniqueness of the album is that the lyrics are all in the village dialect. Words like More instead ofMere (meaning: my) and Biswas instead of Vishwas (meaning: trust) are typical to the village language, and add to the originality of the film. Plus, the pronunciation of words having the Hindi letter Sha as Sa also sound very original. For instance, Bhasa instead of Bhasha (meaning: language). The album comes with the lyrics written on the paper, and so you can sing, while listening to the song.

The album is very good and probably the best so far by A.R.Rahman.
