One expects more from a J.P.Dutta movie...

Originality:

Music coming from a movie made by someone of the likes of J.P.Dutta who is known for his knack for good music does carry along with it a whole lot of expectations .Be it ''Zeehal-e-muskin'' from Ghulami, ''Sandese aate hain'' from ''Border'' or the songs from ''Refugee'', the songs from his movies have always stolen hearts before even the movie made it's impact. Sticking to the same combination of Anu Mallik and Javed Akhtar who had created the magic with the evergreen songs of ''Refugee'' and ''Border'', and dealing with a concept as heart wrenching as the stories of the martyrs of the Kargil war , this movie promised of a soul stirring soundtrack. But alas! Great expectations are seldom fulfilled.

  1. The album starts with the song ''Seemayen Bulayen''.This starts with the chorus singing ''Seemayen bulayen tumhe chal raahii ...seemayen bulayen seepahi'' which sounds more like ''Saathi haath badhana saathi re'' from Naya Daur and brings an ambience of farmers harvesting with joy instead of that of soldiers going for war. But the rest of the song which is rendered by Alka Yagnik is likeable even though it is not one of those scores which you will fall in love with instantly but it gradually grows on you after listening to the track a couple of times.

  2. This is followed by ''Pyar bhara geet'' which is rendered by Shreya Ghosal ( of Devdas fame) and Sonu Nigam. Bingo! Anu Mallik hits the mark with this one. This is a cute song with lyrics that touch the heart. The song is about a young wife who wants to buy some more time with her soldier husband by asking him to sing a song before he leaves for the battlefield. The catchy portion of the song is when Shreya Ghosal sings with her sweet melodious voice ''Piya mera tanman...mere pyaar ke bandhan...do pal tumhe rokte hain '' and Sonu Nigam comes up with the retort ''Koi jaata ho to ..peeche se usko ....aise nahin rokte hain''. As usual Sonu Nigam is at his best at the high scale notes which form a major portion of the song and his voice finds an apt companion in the voice of Shreya Ghoshal who maintains her melodious best from Devdas. When the song ends you start wishing that the rest of the songs would flow in the same manner.

  3. The next song ''Main Kahin bhi Rahoon'' is the record breaker 13 minutes long song which has been rendered by Sonu Nigam, RoopKumar Rathore, Sukhwinder Singh, Udit Narayan, and Hariharan. This song starts with a chorus which reminds you of the chorus in ''Sandese aate hain'' and fills you with delight because now you expect to hear something of the likes of that song. But as it moves on from the chorus you start to realise that this song stands nowhere near that song. ''Sandese aate hain''in Border and ''Hoke majboor mujhe usne bulaya hoga'' from Haqeekat , songs from two great war epics with similar song situations, not only pulled every string in the hearts of the viewers but stay till date as milestones in the path of Bollywood music as great songs where several singers performed and each portion rendered by a singer had his own charm. This song fails to recreate that magic. But it is not a total let down. Every singer does his part well but the music being average, they fail to leave their mark in your hearts after the song is over. The chorus in the song is the only thing that keeps the song alive and is one big reason why this song starts to grow on you after you hear it a couple of times. This song might catch up after people watch the movie as the scenes of the song will affect it's popularity .

  4. The next song ''Khush Rehna'' by Roop Kumar Rathore is a total let down in all terms. The lyrics is very prosaic and hackneyed and the music is dull. The song leaves no scope for the singer who had given his voice to the song ''Ae jaate hue lamhon'' in Border and had stolen the hearts of the listeners.

  5. The last song of the album ( excluding the two instrumentals) is ''Ek saathi aur bhi tha''rendered in the voice of Sonu Nigam. This song appears to be the sad version of ''Pyar Bhara geet'' and stands out as good as it's happier counterpart. This song will certainly turn out to be a tear jerker when people watch the movie. The song has an interlude which reminds you of R.D.Burman's ''O meri Jaan....O meri Jaan ..Ab nahin rehna tere bina''by Asha Bhonsle from Manzil Manzil. Sonu Nigam again manages to leave his mark and Javed Akhtar does a good job with his pen in this one.

  6. The Album ends with two instrumentals. The first one is a version of ''Pyar Bhara Geet'' and is soothing . The other instrumental is called ''Before we forget'' is a version of ''Seemayen Bulayen'' which is also appealing.

On the whole, the music of LOC is average and is not what you would expect from a J.P.Dutta movie but it certainly is not a total let down and is worth a hear.
