I flew from Nashville, TN to Hyderabad, India round trip in March'2008. I flew Delta from Nashville to New York (JFK) and it took forever for us to get to the right terminal for check in. I am not impressed with JFK at all, especially with lack of directions between terminals.
The lady at the check-in counter was extremely rude and even fussed at my carry on bag being 1 kg over the limit. When I explained to her that I am choosing not to carry a personal item and that my laptop was in my carry on bag, she insisted I remove the laptop out and reweigh the bag. I have been traveling international for the last 8 years and have never been subjected to a more rude treatment. The security check line was deceivingly large and we almost missed our flight inspite of standing in the security check line for 1.5 hours. The flight from JFK to KWI was a Boeing 777, which was ok space wise, not as comfortable as the newer air buses.
Seats are equipped with individual monitors, but most of them did not work. Even when we complained to the attendants, there was nothing they could do. I read reviews that complained about this issue, and was kind of prepared. What I was not prepared for was the lack of alcohol. Kuwait airways and the airport in Kuwait do not have alcohol or pork. Most international passengers I know that travel economy class depend on alcohol for a "smoother" journey, and this came as a rather rude surprise to me. As a result, the flight was long and painful, and kids do not do well on flights of this duration. The Kuwait airport was nasty and inspite of being a non-smoking airport, did not adhere to regulations.
The restrooms were dirty and full of cigarette smoke. There were people smoking even beside a "No Smoking" sign. My next flight to Hyderabad was an air bus and was more comfortable. The entertainment screens did not work even this time, but the flight being only 4 hours long made it less painful. On my return flights, none of the monitors worked again and I had the same issues. To top it all, my flight took off 2 hours late due and we had to run to make connections. JFK was equally painful again and we almost missed our connection to Nashville inspite of having a good 3 hours. Our bags did not make it on-time to Nashville, they came the following day. The only good part was the Indian food served in all flights, it is much better than most other airlines.
Overall, I would absolutely not recommend this airlines to anyone who does not live in New York. I would not advise others to travel this airlines or a route via JFK. If this is the only option, please read my review and be prepared about what you may face. Take your own entertainment (not books, my reading lights never worked)!!!
