Third Class copy of Moive 'New York'

The day before yesterday I went to watch Kurbaan. I had gone to watch the movie with little expectations, rather with a neutral mind set. Though I had heard that the story has striking similarity with the movie ‘New York’ and since I had liked that movie, I thought that this movie is again going to be a good watch. And since this one has bigger and better star cast, hence I can expect better performance by the actors.

BUT, I was wrong. After watching the movie I have only this to say; this movie is a third class copy of New York. The storywriter has copied not only the story from New York but even some of the scenes. No doubt that he has tried to insert his part of story here and there in between the scenes. Result: it's become a'Khichdi' which leaves you with so many'How' and'Why' at the end of the movie. The story has no strength to be called as a terrorism movie. Neither is there any love story at all. Overall I would say, I did not like the movie at all and would not suggest anyone to go for it.

Stroy line: Saif Ali Khan is a professor in Delhi where he meets Kareena Kapoor. She too works in the same college as a professor. Very soon he befriends her and proposes for marriage. She agrees and they get married. Upon getting an offer from New York University for Kareena, they decide to move to New York. Saif agrees to leave the job in Delhi and come with her to US. When in US, they buy a house in an Indian neighborhood where all the neighbors are Muslims. Very soon she figures out that there is something wrong with her neighbors and soon finds out that they are planning a plane bombing. She also comes to know that her husband is an accomplice with them. Since she is aware of the plans now, they catch her and put her under house arrest. But before they could do this, she was able to pass the message to one of her acquaintance, Diya Mirza, who happens to be the girl friend of Vivek Oberoi. But Diya dies in the same plane bombing and it's Vivek who gets to know the message sent by Kareena. Instead of passing the message to the cops, he decides to take revenge by himself. He somehow manages to join the terrorist gang and becomes a part of them in their next plan of serial train bombing.

Would they be successful in their new plan? How would Kareena be saved from their clutches? Would Vivek be able to avenge the loss of her girlfriend?

As I do not want to take the fun away from those people who are planning to watch the movie, I leave these questions unanswered for them.

What I liked in the movie: Saif Ali khan, Om Puri and Kiron Kher have given a decent performance. Songs of the movie are hummable, though there are not many. There is not un-necessary background music in most of the scenes. It's a serious movie and lack of Background music makes sure that you take it as seriously as it is meant to be. You may like this movie to some extent if you haven’t already watched New York.

What I did not like: Oh Boy! There are so many to count. First of all there is no originality in the story. There is no suspense. Things are as simple as they look on their face. Then there are flagrant loopholes in every second scene of the movie.

Sample this: they are planning something as big as 9/11. But anyone can come into their house and hear their BIG TERROR plan secretively. They kill one of the member's wife for reasons not given by the director but leave Kareena unharmed even when she knows all their plans.

To prove his mettle, in one of the scenes, the group goes to the market and Vivek is asked to shoot a shopkeeper, without any reason. I fail to understand how can a terrorist group do such damn stupid things when they have something huge already planned for future.

In one of the scenes, Om Puri takes away the cell phones of all the members, prohibiting anyone from talking to outsiders. In the very next scene, Vivek uses a landline phone from a public booth to inform others about his plans. Bechara Om Puri, the great terrorist boss. hahaha.

Towards the end of the movie, these guys are able to carry huge bombs into many stations without any problem. No security check, nothing at all. Though, later the security personnel become so smart that they are able to understand who is the suspect and alert security even before they see him. Oh God, Save me!

There are many WHYs and HOWs in many more scenes.

Then there is great detective Vivek, Who is the most stupid character of the movie. And it has been made sure by him that he plays the character even more stupidly. The character he plays has no idea what he wants, why he wants and how he is going to perform it. But I agree, it's not his but the storywriter's fault. Still, Vivek has left no stone unturned with his acting. In one of the scenes, he asks Saif to kill himself. I told myself, if not Saif, the viewers are definitely going to kill you, for giving such a horrible acting performance.

Gasp! I don't want to think more! The list is endless.

What the producer/director could have done before releasing the movie:

The storywriter should have been fired for writing such nonsense in the name of a thriller. I am sure the producer/director must have watched New York. I wonder why they did not remove the scenes from this movie that are direct pick up from New York. They should have done that, so that people could see it in a fresh light. They should have done post processing to fill the gaping holes the story leaves everywhere. Last but not the least, if they could not have carry out any of the above suggestions, they should not have released the movie at all.

PS:

Q: HOW can one remain alive after being shot by cops in his CHEST, like Saif Ali Khan did?

Ans: Story Writer/Director ka haath ho sir pe to kuchh bhi possible hai:P
