‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hain’ (KKHH) was a very successful attempt by Karan Johar.

The story was different and interesting, but it lacked soul and substance. When I saw the movie soon after its release, even I was impressed with the ‘emotions’ present in the movie. At the end of first half, I was choked with emotions- thanks to the acting and crying by Kajol and the little girl in the movie. Surprisingly, none of my friends were interested in watching the second half.

“We don’t have to stay just because we have paid for the tickets. It’s a torture.”

“There is nothing interesting. Only the designer dresses are good. It’s like a fashion show.”

“I need some fresh air. Can we leave now?”

“I don’t mind, Tina’s character is dead anyway!”said a guy who was Rani’s fan.

We stayed anyway, but I watched the rest of the movie with an alert brain and then even I noticed the flaws.

I know that many other films are worse than this one, but KKHH was just an ordinary film. Did it deserve all the recognition and awards?

I have given the 3 star rating because it was better than some other films. But, its not recommended since its over hyped already.

Since everyone knows the story, I won’t repeat it here. But let’s just take a look at the flaws-

Shahrukh’s character, Rahul, is flirtatious and selfish. Later, he goes to the extent of being cruel and rude.

The scene where he makes fun of Anjali(Kajol) since she is wearing awful make up is disgusting. There are certain unwritten rules in real friendship. You NEVER make fun of your ‘best friend’ in public, no matter how ugly he or she looks. If he or she is looking odd, you take them away from the crowd and tell them the truth.

And then there is the funniest part of the movie. Kajol’s split personality- I mean, give me a break! Is there any connection between Kajol’s character(s) in the first and the second half of the movie (except her obsession with Rahul)?

Rani Mukharjee is doing the role of a very glamorous and attractive girl, Tina. Split Personality Concept is working on her, too! One day, she is a gorgeous ‘student’, entering the college dressed in ultra modern clothes like some model. The next day, she is seen in a temple, wearing a salwaar kamiz and doing a ‘pooja’.

The entire story is based on too many coincidences. The 3-4 leading stars were not enough, so Karan Johar has a whole team of irritating people. (But, I think the kids were cute).

Most of his attempts at creating humor are cheap.

Take for instance, the way Shahrukh and his daughter talk to Farida Jalal. The concept of friendly relation with elder relative was stretched too far, and in a cheap way. How much non-sense are we supposed to tolerate in the name of ‘humor’?

KKHH had strength like slick beautiful visuals, Yash Chopra style look, good acting, nice music, etc.

Indeed, Johar is a superb salesman, who successfully sold a mediocre product and fooled the audience big time.
