This water pitcher is unique: it has a black surface instead of the more usual natural earth color.
Historically it was used by the local Perak Malays for storing drinking water and its unusual gourd shape and color allegedly keeps its contents cool and safe.
Prior to the coming of piped water large pitchers were produced mainly for local people who used them for domestic storage of water. Some local folk even claim that it gives them protection against illness and disorders.
Anyway it's Perak's most popular handicraft and the Labu Sayong has been chosen as the official mascot for the Visit Perak Year 2000 campaign. Some five villages, Kepala Bendang, Bukit Lada, Sayong Ulu, Kuala Sayong Ulu and Sayong Masjid, produce this pitcher and all told there are no less than 30 factories in the area. The biggest is the Koperasi Industri Kampung Kepala Bendang Berhad(KIKKBB) located in Kuala Bendang(Tel: 05-7760255) which is a family - owned and operated business.
