I should start this out by letting you in on a few secrets:

Background Information

  1. I was very very wary to see a Hrithik Roshan movie after his last few Kareena-bombs so I waited until this had won several filmfare awards to see it.

  2. I couldn't sit through the whole thing.

  3. My parents - who eat up every crappy movie that Bollywood churns out - couldn't even sit through the whole thing.

Thoughts

So that having said, I'll let you know what I thought of this much-hyped picture: I felt GUMP'D. (Well really I felt PUNK'D but GUMP seemed more appropriate considering that the plot is a complete rip-off of Forrest Gump and E.T. and does justice to neither.) This movie is awful: it's cheesy, melodramatic, I could have made better special effects using finger puppets (Rakesh Roshan must have embezzled all that ''Jadoo''-money), despite the alien presence - the plot is hackneyed, and the acting is just pitiful.

I'm not sure why Hrithik Roshan got an award for his overblown and hyperactive (just watching him gave me a headache) performance but I have several theories:

  1. People were thrilled he decided to do a movie without Kareena.

  2. Shah Rukh Khan has made hamming seem award-worthy a la KKHH, KKKG, etc.

  3. Aamir Khan didn't have a movie out this year.

  4. The world has gone insane.

Conclusion

Maybe I'm just too critical, maybe I expect too much from movies, or maybe Hrithik redeemed himself at the end, but I have seen a lot of really bad Bollywood movies and this is another to add to the list. The reason I have it more stars than the minimum is because it was nice to see Bollywood trying something sort of different (barring the fact that it was still a copy of Hollywood movies and splattered with enough masala to outweigh the different-ness).

ps. Did the alien creep anyone else out?
