Take 1

Die hard fans of the Sci-Fi fantasy genre can never forget ‘The Extra Terrestrial (ET)’. The 1982 blockbuster signaled the arrival of a genius called Steven Spielberg on to the World Cinema stage. A cult classic, the movie proved to be a phenomenal money-spinner at the Box Office too.

ET showcased the adventures of an alien who is stranded on Earth. The alien subsequently befriends a boy named Elliot. Elliot and his friends help the alien to return to its own land.

The film was equipped with mind-blowing special effects from Lucas Digital Inc., a company that then was in its nascent stage. One scene stands apart. This particular scene had Elliot and the alien on a bicycle, which is soaring high in the skies against a full moon. This was one of the numerous tricks performed by the alien in the film.

Take 2

In 1995, Tom Hanks received his second back-to-back Best Actor Academy Award for delivering a scintillating performance as a low IQ man named Forrest Gump (FG). This powerful drama, directed by acclaimed director Robert Zemeckis, was appreciated worldwide for its unconventional theme.

Forrest Gump chronicles the accidental experiences of Gump with some of the important world figures of yesteryears. But he is too oblivious to accord it any significance.

Now I pose a question to the readers!

Can any filmmaker ever hope to remake the above classics without compromising on the production values and the presentation?

Lo and behold! Our very own Rakesh Roshan has ventured into this alien territory. His forthcoming ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ (KMG) not only draws ‘inspiration’ (whatever that means) from the above two movies but actually is a combination of the two. This means that you are actually getting the best of the two acclaimed movies at the price of one! Who will not want to grab the offer?

The promotional trailers of KMG are doing the rounds of music channels these days. In these we see a sloppily clad Hrithik Roshan dancing around with the female lead. His dance steps are awry, hairstyle weird and antics hilarious. After all, he is trying to play a low IQ man. Remember!!

Since KMG is a Hindi movie, therefore, it has to have a ‘heroine’. So in steps our own next-door neighbor, Preity Zinta. She plays a girl who understands the protagonist and fully comprehends his under developed mind. So we have ample scope of exhibiting human emotions and melodrama in the film, two very important ingredients for a Hindi potboiler.

Somewhere in KMG, you are also introduced to an alien character, a la ET. How this character is intertwined with the main plot remains to be seen.

KMG releases sometime in July 2003. Its fate at the BO will be decided only after that. But going by the promos, one can easily grasp that the film will once again prove to be a bad copy.

Folks, I may be wrong. The film might prove to be a successful money-spinner. But my reckoning is ‘Why imbibe a theme and a concept from the West? Why not make an original Sci-fi thriller?’

Surely, the Indian creative talent has not died down yet!!
