Karan Johar’s much hyped talk-show has certainly been met with a mixed response, no doubt about it. Trust me, there’s no in between here-You’re either going to completely love it or hate it. Whilst some admire his ability to cook up controversy, bringing up the juiciest of gossip hitting tinseltown, others, most notably large sections of the media, pan him for his feminisque characteristics and the ever so evident ‘Simi-wannabe’ vibe you inevitably get off his show.

But whatever your opinion of Karan and his show is, if you have any sense of curiosity within you for what’s happening in the lives of your favourite fimi personalities, this show will have you returning to the idiot box week after week. It’s simply addictive.

I for one, personally find Karan Johar excruciatingly annoying. I mean, he somehow manages to twistingly over-dramatize. everything on his show to resemble his dreadfully soppy flicks. For example, take his reasoning for doing a talk show, aired on the very first episode:

“When I was young and weighing 300 pounds…my mother told me I should become a model ….blah blah blah blah…………………………..This show is for you mum”

Finally when his never-ending k3g style dialogue was over, we could finally look forward to two exciting guests. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

Now that’s where Karan really scores over his contempories. His guests. The fact that he pairs up, week after week two celebrities: be it friends, arch rivals, a director and his muse and so on….is reason enough for you to watch the show. Now, how could you pass up the opportunity of catching the likes of Shah Rukh and Kajol, Preity and Saif, Kareena and Rani, Aishwarya and Sanjay Leela Bhansali- each in exclusive intimate interviews.

As much as I respect Simi Garewal as a chat-show host, there is a certain formality about her show. Now, with Koffee with Karan, the sense of formality is disregarded, as Karan dives right into what viewers really want to know about the stars. You have to hand it to Karan. Whilst many would stay clear of gossip and controversy, Karan isn’t afraid to put his guests on the spot, with a tricky question or two.

There most certainly is something REFRESHING about Koffee with Karan. Be it the innovative set design, the lie detector (which he doesn’t use as much as he should!), the buzzer round and even the fact the guests sign their coffee cups. It just adds to the overall personal touch.

Now to the flip side.

There isn’t a lot wrong wit Koffee with Karan, if you ask me. Buuuuuuut, one flaw in the show is the fact that although it may seem like a great idea to have two guests on a single show-sometimes this proves to be a disadvantage. In a single one hour slot, how can you be expected to gather an intimate portrait of your fave celebs? That’s simply not possible, and although the on-screen chemistry shared by Karan’s guests proves to be great, often we wish that the time interviewing the celebrities would be extended. This most evidently shown when Farah Khan hogged the spotlight of pool ol' Gurinder Chaddha.

But heck, that’s just something minor. All in all, if you can stand Karan and put up with his annoyingness-then this is definitely the show for you.

Catch Koffee with Karan on Fridays at 10pm only on Star World. Like I said, It's simply addictive...
