Everyone panned the movie Kites - bad reviews, negative word-of-mouth publicity and disappointing status messages on Facebook and Twitter. Yet, I had my faith in Filmkraft and Rakesh Roshan. So, I went for the movie. And as with Koi Mil Gayaa and Krissh, Rakesh Roshan tried something different and the result is least bit disappointing.

Agreed, it is not a classic or a movie with a gripping plot or an intense story but still Kites is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Three cheers for Rakesh Roshan for always trying to modernize Hindi Cinema. He does it again with Kites. Two and a half hours filled with subtle humor, great locales, a hot couple and some soothing tunes.

Of course the movie has its fair-share of flaws and some over-the-top chase scenes, but slick direction, great cinematography and some good chemistry between Hrithik and Barbara makes it a great weekend getaway. One of the reasons, I feel, this movie got bad reviews is that it has a sad ending. Somehow, the Indian audience always shies away from a sad ending. Everyone wants to go home happy I guess. Fair enough. But, Anurag Basu, the director provides wholesome entertainment and I rank this movie much higher than any other Hindi movie I’ve seen in recent times (read Housefull, Paathshala etc).

I would recommend that you go to the theatres and watch the movie, just don’t expect too much from it. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride as Kites takes you through a journey of two lovers, caught-up on the wrong side of fate, as they evade the bad guys from Vegas to Mexico and back. At the end of the show, you won’t be disappointed with the money you have spent.
