I use tomato sauce purely as a defensive ingredient. Let me explain what I mean. If my samosa, bread pakora or sandwich is tasty and enjoyable, I have no need for any sauce. It’s only when the taste of the food is indifferent or boring that I need to reach for the bottle of tomato sauce to makes things more interesting – or even bearable sometimes.
Having said that, let me tell you that my preferred choice of sauce has always been Kissan. It has always faithfully stood there on my kitchen shelf, ready to come to my rescue if some food or snack item lets me down. Over the years, many other brands have been launched quite frequently and today’s young customers are spoilt for choice. But I have always remained loyal to Kissan. In return, the brand has always maintained the consistency of its quality, taste and texture. Some sauces are too spicy, others are too watery while others tend to have an unpleasant aftertaste – but Kissan always seems to get it right.
Also, Kissan is readily available all over the country. As I travelled from city to city, I was forced to change brands when it came to pickles, bread, spreads and dips… but Kissan was available everywhere. Thank God for that – I certainly didn’t want to try other sauces every time I went from one city to the next! Only once, in a small town in Sikkim, did I have to buy a local brand of tomato sauce. It was so spicy and fiery that I had smoke coming out of my ears!
Kissan tomato sauce is a brand that I grew up with. That familiar bottle has been a part of many delightful snacks all through my childhood and my teens. Later whenever I had guests over for tea, my canapés made with Monaco biscuits, Amul cheese and a dab of Kissan tomato sauce were always hugely popular. And now, as I sit writing this review – there it is: my bottle of Kissan sauce resting comfortably on the kitchen counter, as it always has for decades.
