Subhash Ghai returns to the big screen,as a director, after 4 years, after the flop ?Yaadein?.After the sour ?yaadein? (memories) of his last film,he has come up with his biggest project ever, titled ?Kisna-The Warrior Poet?.This much awaited film is set in the pre-independence era.For this film,Subhash Ghai launched two new fresh faces-Isha Sharvani a classical dancer and Antonia Bernath-a beauty from the west. This is one such film,on which Ghai has worked very hard. Will his hard work bring him the success back again, for which he has been craving since last 4 years?

THE FILM:

Mukta Arts.?Kisna?,directed by Subhash Ghai, stars Vivek Oberoi,Antonia Bernath,Isha Sharvani,(late)Amrish Puri,Om Puri,Vivek Mushran,Yashpal Sharma and also features Sushmita Sen and Hrishitaa Bhatt,in special appearances. This is one of the most awaited and the biggest project of the year and the industry has sky-high expectations from this film.Does it live up to the expectations?

THE STORY:

The film starts with an old lady from the British, named Katherine (Antonia Bernath),who comes to India on a Republic Day with her announcement of putting in some of her money into the development and betterment for a place called Devparyag. As people are eager to know why she does so,Katherine tells them her whole story, and goes into a flashback.

The story goes into the pre-independence era, towards the 1940s,when the British were still ruling in the Indo-Pak subcontinent.Kisna (Vivek Oberoi) was Katherine`s childhood friend, from whom she was separated by her father, who feared that she might not fall in love with the Indian boy. After many years,Katherine finally returns to India, when the news of independence in India are spreading throughout the country.

Katherine, after so many years still loves Kisna, but Kisna is not interested in her anymore, though he still likes her.Kisna knows that his family will not let him to meet Katherine as they hate British who have had given the Indians so many difficulties.Kisna also gets engaged to Luxmi (Isha Sharvani),an Indian girl, who is very much in love with Kisna.

All hell breaks loose when Kisna`s uncle Bhairon (Amrish Puri) and his brother,Shankar (Yashpal Sharma),along with a greedy prince Raghuraj (Rajat Kapoor) decide to kill Katherine`s father and to finish her whole family, but Kisna`s sympathies are with Katherine,so he is off to save them from this attack.Kisna saves Katherine, due to which he earns lots of hatred from his family, especially his uncles but without caring about anything,Kisna takes Katherine to a safe place called Shivpuri,as per his mother`s order, where no one can harm her. There,Kisna`s and Katherine`s love grows stronger and they fall deeply in love with each other again? Will they be able to win against all odds?If it will happen so,then what will happen of Luxmi, who loves Kisna so much? And in the present, where has Kisna gone, when Katherine has turned old?To find out the answers to these questions, watch Kisna.

MY ANALYSIS:

Vivek Oberoi comes back to the big screen after the highly disappointing ?Kyun?Ho Gaya Na!?,and much expectedly he gives a wonderful performance in this film. From the boy-next-door to a warrior, the actor has taken a big step and it was worth it.He performs very well,be it the romantic scenes or be it those serious scenes, when he tries to save Katherine and when he turns against the plans of his uncles, but this performance is only an excellent performance,it`s not perfect.Vivek Oberoi still needs a little bit of improvement to carry off such difficult roles. In emotional scenes,he looked very uneasy and a bit immature,so he needs to look after such small things.

Antonia Bernath surprisingly, turns out to be the best performer in this film. She looks gorgeous in the film and secondly her performance is clapworthy. The trailors said that she expressed it all through her eyes, and I agree with it.Her eyes are so expressive that she uses this speciality of hers and acts through her eyes. She is excellent in the scenes she shares with Kisna when he takes her to a safe place. The actress has breathed life into Katherine`s character, and that`s why you can relate with Katherine.

Isha Sharvani doesn`t get much scope to perform but she definitely gets enough time to dance, and I must say that her dance is wonderful and a treat for those who like classical dances. This is the best dance,we have seen on the big screen,in recent times.I hope she gets more movies,in future so that we can also judge her performance.

Amrish Puri`s death was something very tragic and we can definitely not find a replacement for such a great actorThis film has been touted as his last release. The actor has done a brilliant job,in a negative role again. This performance will also be a memorable one.

Yashpal Sharma,Vivek Mushran and Rajat Kapoor, also lend able support.

Sushmita Sen in her much hyped mujra sequence looks very pretty and she also has two scenes in the film.Though she was not needed in the film, but never mind as she looks prettier than ever, but there is one thing I can certainly say-Hrishitaa Bhatt was totally wasted in a cameo.

Subhash Ghai comes back into form after a long time.Only a director of his caliber could have directed such a film as this one.The director has extracted wonderful performances, from his star cast and also provides his viewers with some very interesting moments.

From the very beginning of the movie, when the old Katherine starts telling her story,Ghai succeeds in getting your attention. The scenes that follow when Katherine returns to India in 1947 and when things are not the same between Kisna and her are interesting to watch. The scene, when Kisna`s uncles plan to kill Katherine`s father takes the graph of the film upwards and when Kisna helps Katherine, the drama increases further, but after that the film becomes a bit predictable and run-off-the-mill kind, when Kisna takes Katherine to a safe place and the second half becomes a bit boring but the actors make it up with good performances. The excellent, but dragged climax, again takes the graph of the film upwards, where both the brothers Kisna and Shankar challenge each other to have a fight and then,Katherine asks Shankar to kill her.

Screenplay is gripping but at places, some characters seemed to be confused. One fails to understand that if Kisna loves Katherine so much and if he is a very brave person too,so why doesn`t he at the first hand, supports Katherine and gets engaged to Luxmi, instead.Secondly,Luxmi`s feelings towards Kisna are also not justified.

Dialogues of the film are beautiful and very well-written.Thankfully,there are no dialogues in the film which would disgust Hindus,Muslims or British.Sets and costumes are beautiful and simply out of this world. The beautiful sets make for a visual treat.
