Kill Bill Vol.1 may be one of Tarantino’s best or worst, depending on how Vol.2 ties the first together. It’s a travesty that Miramax wouldn’t let Tarantino put this movie out all at once, because it is like watching the first half of a movie and someone asking you if you thought it could be the best movie of the year. So, keeping in mind that it is only HALF of a movie, I can say that Kill Bill Vol.1 is full of attitude. Uma Thurman, who might have not been perfect for the role (while she did give a tremendous effort), still delivered awesome action scenes and her sword work was nothing short of spectacular. Lucy Liu delivered the best dialogue in the movie and nailed her stone cold character; this could be the role that defines her career (not the horrible Charlie’s Angel series). However, the way that Tarantino slowed down the dialogue for this movie bugs me. I know that he did it to mimic the spaghetti westerns of old and to place emphasis on the action, but it just isn’t very, well, Tarantino. In Quentin’s movies, there are always sharp characters who deliver priceless lines that will stick with you for years, but this movie seemed to lack that trait, which is the only reason this movie loses a star (which it may gain back depending on the second half of the movie).

The plot is simple, easy to follow, with a twist thrown in at the end to ensure that the viewer comes back to see Vol. 2. Much like every western and kung fu flick, the protagonist, Uma Thurman has been wronged and seeks revenge on her would be assassins in an honorable way. She must battle mothers in front of their children, male nurses, bodyguards, Triad bosses, and, of course, hundreds of useless henchman who are great at dying in cool ways. The movie’s action is its strong point; the fight scenes are so well done that you find yourself ducking and clinching your fist; you will be chopping down bad guys in your head for days. The music is well chosen, as always, because Quentin Tarantino ALWAYS finds the right song for the right part, sometimes writing in parts in the movie solely based on the music.

Overall, after seeing the first part of the movie, I would say that this one will be somewhere between Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, it’s not as good as Pulp Fiction, but, believe it or not, left in the hands of another director, it could have been worse than Jackie Brown. As for all you hardcore Tarantino fans, you will be pleased with the details that only exist in Quentin World (Red Apple cigarettes anyone?).
