New ideas are always welcome in films. But these ideas can work big time provided the execution is correct. Ki & Ka is based on an amazing concept of a married couple where the rules are reversed – the man happily stays at home running the house while the wife is out there climbing the corporate ladder. The comic and quirky moments that arise as a result of this arrangement is damn funny at places but the film falters after a point that affects the overall impact to an extent.

The story of the movie: Kia(Kareena Kapoor) is a young ambitious woman working as a marketing manager. She meets Kabir Bansal(Arjun Kapoor), son of the very rich builder(Rajit Kapur). She is impressed and intrigued by the fact that Kabir is not interested in his father’s business and instead, wants to be like his mother who was a housewife. Both soon realize that they both can compliment each other very well and get married. At first, everything goes hunky dory but soon cracks start appearing in their relationship.

Ki & Ka’s beginning portions are just brilliant. Kia’s entry is witty but the real fun begins when she meets Kabir. Their dates are quite quirky and keep the interest going. Ideally, the whole thing should have been realistic. But instead, Kia & Kabir talk in a dramatic, filmy way. But somewhere it works and if it doesn’t, one soon gets used to it. Things go great until the Dubai sequence. This is where the film goes off track a bit for the first time. But soon the film gets back on track as the scenes thereafter spring a surprise. However, the conflict portions are where the interest level dips to an extent. The idea is nice but one wishes if this was not the film’s point of conflict. However, R Balki the writer tries to engage viewers because the points raised here are very valid. The finale scene could have been hilarious but instead, it is simply okay.

Arjun Kapoor delivers a stupendous performance and is terrific as the stay at home hubby. There’s a bit of what is perceived as arrogance in the way he talks and it works very well with his character, especially in the beginning portions. Kareena Kapoor as always looks charming and gives a great performance as well. In fact, she dominates the climax and the pre-climax beautifully. The Arjun-Kareena pairing is lovely. Swaroop Sampat(Kia’s mother) is fine. Rajit Kapur(Kabir’s father) goes a bit overboard but that is as per the character’s requirement. Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan are lovely in their cameo appearances.

Music is entertaining and goes well with the mood of the film. Foolishq, Most Wanted Song and Pump It are very well shot. Ji Huzoori is beautiful while High Heels is a chartbuster. Ilaiyaraaja’s background score is different but works well. P C Sreeram’s cinematography is engaging. He has experimented a lot and it pays off. Rupin Suchak’s production design is far from reality but makes an impact, especially the miniature train models in Kia & Kabir’s residence. R Balki’s story is novel and in a way, the need of the hour. His dialogues are damn interesting as well – simple, yet making lot of sense and laced with humour. Screenplay is a bit faulty especially in the second half of the film. His direction is fine for most of the film but is haphazard at places that take away the charm somewhat. His debut directorial Cheeni Kum had a great direction. But Paa, although a fine film, was too quick and fast-paced. Shamitabh was his weakest film and Ki & Ka also could have been better executed. Everything made great sense in the first half but the same doesn’t happen in the second half. The end portions especially don’t make the same kind of impact, although the hospital scene is damn good. Nevertheless, a good attempt by Balki and hope he comes up with better, quirky films in future!

Some of the best scenes:

  1. Kia & Kabir meet for the first time

  2. Kia & Kabir’s numerous dates

  3. Kabir meets Kia’s mother; Kia meets Kabir’s father

  4. Kia & Kabir get married

  5. The intermission point

  6. All songs of the film

  7. The Amitabh Bachchan & Jaya Bachchan

  8. Drama at the hospital

On the whole, Ki & Ka is a quirky and entertaining film that is based on a very novel premise. It’s fun to see the role reversal and the performances by Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor add to the fun. Dialogues are smart but the execution is haphazard at places. The finale of the film is supposed to be the best part of the film but that doesn’t quite happen here. This could have been a much better film. Nevertheless, worth watching once for the novelty and performances!
