Khane Khaas

Tucked away on a corner at a junction of 16th. Road and 33rd. Road bang opposite Mini Punjab is this little eatery ( more of a take-away) which serves sumptous wholesome Punjabi fare that goes easy on your pocket too.

Their Chicken Biryani is just the right blend of flavour and fragrance. Not too oily and served in an Earthen Pot sealed with dough its just the right menu for a hungry night out. Slice open the dough and the kesar(saffron) flavour whifts through the air and raises your appetitie to oblivion. Salivate and just delve into the depths of this Earthen globe and your each spoonful will urge you for more.

Try their kebabs and tikkas. Go for the paya or the rogan josh. Its a delight and a feast for the gluttons.

They also serve Biryani by the kilo and I have tried them out for some big get-togethers and they have come up aces.

My Vegetarian friends need not despair.

Their Veg Biryani also is something to talk about. And very delicious. The Dal Makhani is just the kind that would greet you in the dhaabas of Punjab highways. With a swirl of butter. Their Bhindi Masala is like typically home cooked Punjabi fare. But the 'Sarson ka saag' which is a winter speciality coupled with 'Makkai(corn) ki roti' is finger licking. Accompanied by the evergreen Punjabi Onion and coriander green chutney with onion rings and you can burp to your heart's content. Try to squeeze the lemon wedges on your heavy Ghee/Oily food and you can cut down the grease to a certain extent.

Or you could try asking them to go easy on the oil or ghee and they will be only too happy to oblige.

Not much of a place one would fancy to sit in and eat, but they do have a about six plastic tables and can seat around 20 people comfortably. Don't expect an A.C. here, the fans try hard to keep you cool. This place is more known for its home delivery and take aways.

Dont expect valet parking - You would have to hunt parking place in some nook or corner in the bylanes adjacent.

Soft drinks is all they can serve - you could though just hop into a wine shop bang opposite and satiate your craving for hard drinks. Deserts are a bare minimum - maybe some basic kulfi or standard ice cream. Its more like a rough-it-out joint.

I will be updating the prices shortly for some items in the menu, so do watch out.

They have a heavy set gentleman who handles the counter and the constantly ringing phone with polite restraint. I have also seen an unassuming thin slightly built Sardarji here who also seems to run this joint with aplomb besides a lady with a thickish voice. I guess they are all three partners in this place.

On the whole a nice place to order your food home or rough it out in the coming winter days for hot hot delicius Punjabi food at quite welcome prices.

Bon appetit !
