This is a movie, which proves that people do appreciate good movies. In fact they are waiting for one such movie to flood to the theatres.

How many years have passed since we have seen a good Malayalam movie-a movie with a message,a movie whose characters seem real,a movie which makes you think even after you leave the theatre?

Been many years? Then it's high time you watched Kazhcha.

This movie marks the directorial debut of Blessy,a disciple of the great Malayalam movie-maker Padmarajan and yes,he is a fit disciple too.The visuals are breathtakingly beautiful. The countryside with all its beauty, simplicity, goodness and innocence has been captured beautifully by Blessy.Blessy's artistic eye has captured not only the charm of the 'Kuttanadan' countryside but also the horrifying spectacle of Gujarat after the earthquake.

The Story

The story centres around Madhavan(Mammooty) ,the local 'film-show' man who goes around showing movies to the rural folk.An accidental meeting with a young boy Bhuvan( Master Yash) who speaks an alien tongue changes his life, perhaps for ever. The young boy whose language Madhavan does not understand suffers from epilepsy. With a villager's innocence,Madhavan takes the boy home where Bhuvan captures the hearts of all and sundry. He is nicknamed 'kochundapri' by Madhavan's young daughter Ambili(Sanusha).

He becomes a part and parcel of the family after he rescues Ambili in the flood. This is a very touching moment of the movie when the audience realizes along with Madhavan that the boy has become like 'a son' to him.

But the indian bureaucracy intervenes under pressure from some 'samaritan' politicians and sends the boy to a juvenile home.Madhavan is also arrested under charges of child abuse .After being released,Madhavan and his family make many attempts to adopt the boy,but all to no avail. In the end, the only option available to Madhavan is to take the boy to Gujarat, his homeland. And then you have the most hearttouching moments in the movie.

Will Pavan,a victim of the earthquake in Gujarat meet his parents?

Will Madhavan be able to adopt him?

These questions are answered rather realistically in this movie.

The highlights of the movie

One of the major highlights of the movie is the child stars.Since this is a movie centred around children, the child stars had to be really good if the film had to be a success. Not only do they don't disappoint you, they make you think they are real people.Kudos to them! Both Sanusha and Yash have played their parts really well.Praiseworthy is the acting of the boy Yash ,particularly his scenes with a seasoned actor like Mammooty.

Mammooty is an actor who gets so much into the flesh of the characters that he portrays that he tends to be known by their names.Mammooty has played the role of Madhavan with such depth that only a common man called Madhavan can be seen in the movie,no trace of Mammooty at all.

Most of the actors in this movie are new-comers.Yet they seem extremely comfortable in their roles.

The dialogues in this movie are quite controlled and apt.Nobody descends into melodrama. The last scene is commendable in this respect.

The children sound like children .They have not been added to increase the cuteness of the scenes.

There are four songs in all.The songs do not in any way interrupt the story sequence. They are a treat to watch.

The song'Jugunu re' pictured on Pavan's memories of his homeland is haunting and touching.A child's wonder and feelings have been beautifully captured in this song.

The song 'Kunje ninakku vendi' pitts the innocence and goodness of Madhavan and his family against the mechanical, unemotional, uncaring attitude of the system.A father's yearning for his son strikes a chord in your heart through this song.

-The Message

The message in this movie is loud and clear.Love can transcend all boundaries.Language is no barrier as is proved through this movie. It also raises some questions about the flexibility of our legal system. The sad truth is that the tender and humane tendencies of the common man is viewed with distrust by the system while the guilty walk free

So if you are looking for reasons to go to the theatre, this is one.And this movie is one which can be appreciated fully only in a theatre.Go and watch this one.It is a good Kazhcha.
