After months and moths of abstaining from writing on MS I find myself lured in by a requested review on Katie Holmes. Wow…I must be really pathetic… But with all the gossip and the tabloid “news” to write about and my need to get my mind out of serious academic deliberations and into the gutter…I’ll give it a shot!

Katie as Joey (Katie is noticed)

I first got to know Katie Holmes as “Joey” in WB’s Dawson’s Creek, a teenage soap opera (at least in my opinion). She played the love sick 16 year old girl next door pining for the oblivious best friend Dawson (can’t believe James Van DerBeek was the lead) who was busy chasing new girl from NYC Jen (Michelle Williams who was awesome in Brokeback!!) and was in turn being chased by Pacey, Dawson’s best friend (played by Joshua Jackson + best looking guy on the show). Dawson’s Creek was quite popular among us Middle Schoolers and ran for 5 seasons…(she ends up with Pacey by the way). Katie Holmes was definitely the “it” girl on the small screen in those days (well if you didn’t count Buffy) and was actually pretty tolerable as an actress.

Katie in the Movies (she ain’t no Nicole Kidman)

This is the part where I say that Katie Holmes…attempted to do some decent movies (attempted is the operative word here). I have to confess…movies with Katie Holmes never really sparked my interest. Not that she’s a bad actress but the movies she picks aren’t the greatest. Apart from Wonder Boys – in which she plays a minor character Katie’s movies have been stereotypically targeted for the 8-15 age group for which I think she fits the bill very well. Unfortunately they are all avoidable. Some of her decent movies include Abandon -where she plays a college girl traumatized by her ex boyfriend and…actually that’s pretty much it (I haven’t seen thank you for smoking as yet).

TOMKAT - Tom and Katie become a Joke

Now I don’t really have anything against couples that are obviously mismatched. I mean there are a lot of Hollywood couples that you hear of and ask “what is she doing with HIM?!!!”. We have Ashton Kutcher with Demi Moore, Heidi Klum with Seal, Cathrine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas… but Tom and Katie take the cake.

I’m not sure what it is that makes them seem so unlikable. Maybe it’s the overt gestures of love (MTV movie awards 2005) that look like the two are trying to prove something all the time. They’re almost as fake as Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley were (and that’s really saying something). Or maybe it’s Mr. Scientology who just can’t shut up and goes around giving unwelcome advise, or Katie Holes saying she dreamed of marrying Tom Cruise as a little girl (…). Or the dramatic proposal on the Eiffel tower (cheesy) or hell…maybe it’s just the image of Tom Cruise jumping on Opera’s sofa…

Which leads me “why is she doing it?”

I’ve heard a lot of reasons from true love (grow up!)…to being paid 2 million dollars per month based on a contract with Tom Cruise whose out to prove his manhood…

But really...let’s face it… Katie Holmes is no A- list actress. And Tom Cruise is a HAS BEEN. So what happens when people try to give their career/image a boost? (I’ll give you a hint…any publicity is good publicity although I’m not so sure in this case).

Well that sums it up folks…for further deliberations (or to tear apart my review) you may proceed to the comments sections…
