How much it’s annoying to hear this statement? 

Living in the ages of computer viruses (not to forget the swine flu), it’s very difficult to protect our Operating System from harmful infections all alone. Having been the victim of poisonous viruses like true love, autorun.inf, so and so.exe files, most of my time was spent for reinstalling the OS. Sometimes I used to wonder, how trickily these viruses have been programmed, yeah!

Each of them works in their unique style. They visit our systems through pen drives, email attachments and now popular social networking sites are taking the role of spreading toxics in a friendly manner.

Imagine a life----

Encounters with few anti viruses:-

AVG:

My encounter started with AVG free version. Oops! Freeware has brought some malware along with it. And it lacks anti-root kit protection, fails to detect certain file types and email born viruses.

Norton and McAfee:

Well, A big no to both of them. They are resource hungry, will slow down the computer drastically. And I think they are sleeping most of the time, very poor detection.

Avast:

Available as free of cost, detects virus and creates an ambulance noise. But, it could perform neither disinfection nor deletion.

Should I have to meet a separate doctor for disinfection?

Kaspersky:

Finally I ended up my experiments and bought Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, let us explore it.

How much fast?

-During installation, it took some extra time when compared with other products but better with previous versions. It will throw errors when it founds traces of any other anti viruses or its own products in registers. So make sure that your memory is clean before installing.

-Coming to scanning, there are 4 types of scans available. They are Quick scan, Full scan, Object scan and vulnerability scan. Scanning rate observed was reasonable. For instance, Full scan can be completed within minutes rather hours. 

-Loading time is bit slow (observed nearly 3-4 minutes), which in turn slows down the booting of the system.

How much resource hungry?

The main drawback of most of the antivirus is that they used to occupy most of the space and decline our systems performance. On the other hand, this one does not use much memory and thereby system performance is not slowed down.

What about detective agency?

It detects wide variety of viruses, worms, Trojans, adware, malware, spyware; etc…After detecting, disinfection /deletion is performed effectively.

It offers complete internet protection by enabling real time monitoring of files, web pages and e-messages. It blocks suspicious programs based on their behavior. It keep us away from cyber criminals by providing anti-spam and anti-phishing in email programs and disabling links to malicious websites. 

User friendly or not?

Interface is clear and easy to use. We can customize our protection settings depending on our requirements. Graphs, charts, color codlings are accompanied for our easy interpretation. Instant notifications are thrown then and there when a virus has been detected. Customer care is well maintained. Live chats, forums, email support are ready to clear our doubts.

Up to date?

Update center offers 3 options –automatic, manual and by schedule. First choice provides automatic antivirus database updates .Later choices allow us to set up updates based on our preferences.

Anything else?

Parental control- Using this feature, parent’s can restrict their children’s access to adult only websites, e-stores, chat rooms etc.

Virtual Keyboard-.

This tool prevents the interception of data entered at the keyboard as there is a danger that personal information will be intercepted using hardware keyboard interceptors or key loggers, which are programs that register keystrokes

Other services include, creating a rescue disk to repair damaged system, cleaner wizard for erasing histories and browser configuration wizard which analyzes browser security settings.

Costly?

Bit chaos here. Yeah, price varies from one retail shop to another. I bought, Kaspersky Internet security 2010--3 user for 750rs.My friend got the same for 1000rs.I heard that even we can get it for 400rs.The actual price quoted by Kaspersky website is $59.95.confusing, huh? But I can say it is worth enough.

Finally?

I won’t say it is ‘the best’ antivirus software but I can say, ‘better’ than others.
