I have had the opportunity to sit beside karan at Wago Mama, a japanese joint in London, and this is what I think of him..

Karan's Style

Karan Johar's movies, ordinarily classified as emotional melodramas, find an immense appeal among audiences in all over the globe. His style exemplifies the conventional and paradoxical nature of Indian people and the upper class in particular. He chooses to reflect the society's craving for opulence and attention and their hankering to flaunt their possessions and wealth. His movies also showcase the firm respect expected toward the elders in the family. His movies portray the display of over indulgent affection on one hand and a fascination of convent education and elite-boarding schools on the other hand, and also an affinity for and towards hierarchy.

Karan Johar movies express these facets together with pompous and vibrant sing-song which celebrates these aspects. Inspired by the Yash Chopra style of filmmaking, almost all of Johar's films rank high in the "feel good" and "glamorous realism" factor. Karan Johar movies consistently celebrate material luxuries and are characterized by elaborate sets, exquisite costumes and picturesque songs.

KJ's Trivia

All movies written by Karan Johar (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna), start with 'K' and consist of four words due to numerological reasons. Most movies produced by Karan Johar and his production company Dharma Productions consistently feature his favorite actors, among them Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta, Farida Jalal, Himani Shivpuri, Johnny Lever, Anupam Kher and Reema Lagoo. However, Karan Johar is not completely against giving newcomers a chance in his films. Karan prefers to work with a certain crew that consists of choreographer Farah Khan, music directors Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, costume designer Manish Malhotra, production designer Sharmishta Roy, lyricist Javed Akhtar and dialogue writer Niranjan Iyengar amongst others.
