We decided to have dinner on Saturday at Karaikudi restaurant at Anna Nagar as my nephew from Mumbai wanted to sample authentic Chettinad cuisine. What a bad bad decision that was! We reached the place by 7:45 PM and it was partially empty. On the ground level, there were only 2 tables empty (near the loo). Eating out with a child, we requested thrice for a table for 4 on the top level (which was completely empty). . But per the waiter, the top level was “Booked”!
However, sitting opposite to there, we did see quite a few families and singles (obviously not known to each other) going there after we placed our order. Anyway, we did not press it further(after 3 requests that is) and instead indulged in delicious visions of mutton and chicken biriyanis, brain masalas, and kal dosais...woe is me! The biriyani was abysmal and had no resemblance to a Chettinad biriyani(cost abt 130rs). It did have an overpowering uncooked garam masala smell .
The portion sizes did not suffice for one with only a couple of mutton pieces. Same goes for the brain masala. The kal dosai was passable at best! The rates are quite steep and the bill came to about 600 for 3 biriyanis, a kal dosa and a brain masala. We definitely were neither full nor satiated. We did complain about the food quality to the waiter and were met with "is it? ok".
The ambiance and service which might have been good long time ago were now with peeling paint and waiters who were huddling together and chatting rather than serving the customers. In one word, the experience was "Abysmal". I would never go back there!
