If Swami Vivekananda had not come to this place, Kanyakumai would have remained an obscure little fishing village. Basically at heart it is still a fishing village with lots of hotels, shops built up all over the place. The beaches are dirty and crowded. TTDC has built some structures supposedly to improve tourism, but it is suggested to skip them. There is something called sunset point, climbing on which you can if you ae lucky watch sunset(also not recommended). You should be careful never to buy cameras, perfumes, goggles or any electronic item here, all of them are fake. All other items are mostly of poor quality and dont buy without bargaining with them. Vivekananda Rock is another popular place to which you have to board a boat operated by TN Government. Sometimes the boat services are cancelled in case weather is not good. You can expect to stand in a quee to get tickets for this boat.

The weather is usually hot all the year round. However, in December-January it is bearable. The only saving grace is Vivekanana\dapuram run by Ramkrishna Mission, it is quite neat & tidy. The beaches Are neat & peaceful. But the facilities are not quite modern.

Another place is Baywatch, water fun park it is not quite large but ok. It has also got a wax museum, of course the quality of statues is no where near Madame Tussaud’s. But it is ok.

Kanyakumari is named after Godess Kanyakumari to whom a temple is dedicated here. Like most temples in Tamil Nadu, this temple also you can expect lot of touts who ask you money to get a quick darshan, force you to do all kinds of poojas and buy prasadams(all for money of course).

There is something called Circular Fort(about 5 kms) from Kanyakumari, which can be visited in case youhave some time with you. There are all types of hotels in Kanyakumari, some are good and some are bad(depends upon how much you are ready to pay). Generally hotels in Kanyakumari are not cheap.

In short, dont come to this place just to visit Kanyakumari, you can come over in case you have planned a trip to Trivandrum or Rameshwaram or like most people make it a combine trip with Rameshwaram-Madurai-Kodaikanal-Kanyakumari.

Dont expect to find in Kanyakumari what Swami Vivekananda had found, todays kanyakumari is nothing but a unch of hotels, crowded & dirty beaches with stalls selling all kinds of trinkets.
