Kanpur is popularly called the "Manchester of North India". This is because of its Cotton textile mills and industrial location. It is situated on the bank of river Ganga, the longest river of India. Kanpur is a metro city with a population of more than 20 Lac.
It is an industrial city having cotton textile mills, leather, plastic and explosive industries. The architectural beauty of this city lies in the historical monuments build by Britishers in their respective era.
It is a city of temples like J.K.temple, Bithoor temple, Sita temple etc. But the industrial environment is polluting its air and water resources. As per a recent survey conducted by Central agencies, the level of pollution in the air is highest in kanpur amongst all major cities of India. Its industrial environment is polluting the water of Ganga. Drainages, canals, and solid waste are disposed of in the river water. The Ganga Action is taking serious note of it.
City is also better know for its IIT. Aspirants from all over India, especially from North India used to come here for their IIT preparation. Kakadev is best known for this purpose. I live in Kanpur.
The city is over crowded, traffic is very rushy but the city is still under transformation stage.
