KANGALAL KAITHU SEI BY AR RAHMAN

It has been a year of lot of experimentation with out much success for AR Rahman this year in Tamil Film Music. He had composed atleast one good song in each one of this, not on the whole the albums did not make a mark. His last two albums 'Boys' and then 'E 20 U 18' both had a overdoze of peppy numbers made just for the youth - thus failing to get a larger reach. Then comes this album, which is fully loaded with good melodies, good instrumentation, good choice of singers and good https://lyrics. Yes, that enables AR Rahman to prove what he is capable of at a point where critics almost wrote him off. The Master Lives on, The Saga Continues...

1) Azhagiya Cindrella - Hariharan

Lyrics: Pa.Vijay

Hariharan goes on to leave on very long lasting impression with this unique style of singing. Nice Piece of voice modulations from him. The Sax Interlude and the female chorus are simply made for each other. Good Lyrics by Pa. Vijay (arent we tired of Vairamuthu, anyway), but Vijay has to be aware of this - he is using the Flower-Root analogy frequently. More and More I hear this song, it makes me to hear again and again. Its powerfully haunting!. The last time Hariharan sang for ARR was in 'Udhaya' for the song 'Pookum malarai...' which was the the only good song of that album!

2)Aha Thamizhamma - A.R.Rehana,Mathangi,Blaaze

Lyrics: Kabilan

ARR must have thought, how can we leave an ablum without a peppy, youthful number?

Starts very similar to a Boys song. But suddenly the theme starts sounding the Bharathiyar song 'Senthamizh nadenum pothinile', but little faster!. What a twist!. Chanting Tamil alpahabets 'A, Aa, I, Ee...' is a nice choice and fresh thought! It will be good for singers who sing these fashionable peppy numbers works on thier pronounciation - even if its AR Rahmans sister or even if ARR thinks that singing like this is the fashion. A slight deviation is acceptable, too much of it is a danger.

3) Enuyir Tozhiyea - UnniMennon & Chinmayi

Lyrics: Pa.Vijay

I dont believe how Unni Menons Voice starts sounding younger and younger even from the last movie - Enakku 20 Unakku 18 . Chinmayi's initial humming reminds me the almighty Nityashree herself - I go back double check the CD cover again in disbelief. In fact the very idea of starting her with an Humming sounds innovative - the hummings itself sounds like an Alabanai. Have anyone done this before?. Another Jewel in ARRs Crown. The fluctuations that Unni gives when he says the lines 'Saranadigiren sarvaMMMMMM' and then in 'thool thool Ana..Thun...Mai' are simply mastery of a class set apart.

4) Theekuruvi - Mukesh,Johny,Harini

Lyrics:Thenmozhi

This is one of all time difficult composition to sing. Come on, this is Film Music. The Challenge is on. And who are the singers? The female choice is more or less obvious, one of familiar choices for classical songs - Harini. And she handles the challenge pretty well. The choice for male singer is not obvious though - Here comes new male voice to TFM - Mukesh. He sounds like a wonderful combination of Srinivas, Unni Krishnan and Karthik.

The song starts very much uncharacteristic of ARR. Then Harini starts 'Theekuruvi' really FAST as the thalam is very fast. Then to pacify things, at 1:30 starts a Flute interlude. So soothing! Harini alabanai's and later the same in Mandolin are just wonderful. Not long ago, ARR had Unni krishnan do a alabanai in Parasuram song 'Muppadu nimidam' and they are just great. This time the alabanai is little different as a afterwhile he dims it, takes it to the background and after a while he brings it back. And as if all is not enough, the song is garnished with Johny singing 'ethoma'. Amazing stuff from ARR.

5) Anarkali - Karthik,Chitrasivaraman, Murdasha (Or is it Mustafa?)

Lyrics: Pa.Vjay

The song starts like a Hindustani Gazal (Or is it Qawali) and tabala throughout songs sustains the impression pretty strong. Chitra Sivaraman and Karthik Pair does another 'Ale Ale' fresh from Boys, yet so nice. You will not fail to hum this song just after the first hear - for sure. This song is typical of ARRs style and I guess its one of his strengths. I am not really impressed with the lyrics here. But Karthik has done a good job here. 'Ga Ri Saa Sa Saa...Ga Ri Saa Sa Saa = Ana r Ka l eee... Ana r Ka l ee'

Highlights

  1. The Album is sure to join the likes of 'Rythm', 'Kandukondean, Kandukondean' and the likes

  2. Welcome Mukesh the new find, a fine start

  3. Good Lyrics, more or less fresh.
