I drove down to Kanch - 75 kms from Chennai on a Sunday afternoon.

I would suggest that you go via the Poonamalle High Road and then touch the Bangalore Toll paid High way [ Rs 20 one way ] - much pleasant drive rather than the one through Tambaram.

It took me nearly two hours to reach the place at 4 p.m.

A quick internet search showed that there a four main temples -

  1. Vishnu temple - you would reach this first - if you took the Tambaram route. Video camera charges @ Rs 100 - but pay it - it worth it! Any then pay Rs 2 to touch the Golden Lizard - a small hand painted board states that touching it ensures that the sins are washed away. I did both - so now I have the massive horses - about 50 of them - each having a different expression in the face - captured for posterity; and my sins have been washed away. The gopuram is massive and worth a closer look. Time taken - 30 mins

  2. Drive three kms away [ straight road ] to the Kailash Temple - no photography allowed. I reached around 5 p.m - the setting sun and the massive Nandi made a nice photo op - with a still camera I meant! There is a massive Shivalingam. You would also be surpised to see Devi Durga in different poses adorning the walls. By the look of it - there seems to be multiple Sivalingams placed in the now empty cavities in the wall.

  3. Next on the list was Kamakshi temple. As per folklore Kamadev and Parvati got married here. There is also a part of a mango tree that has mangoes with four distinct tastes. There is a long passageway with impressive sculptures on both sides - its more like the long passage of rameswaram temple.

  4. A quick refreshment and we went and visited the Embaranath Temple.

So it took me 4 hours to cover the main four temples - of course I was unable to visit the Mutt and other temples due to time constraints.
