A tributeto 70's cinema, the cinema of yore! Only this time, the director paying thetribute is not Farah Khan. The filmmaker here is Vishal Bhardwaj. So don't goin expecting Om Shanti Om kinda candy floss and escapist no-brainer. This oneis certainly a tribute to the cinema of yore in terms plot, sub-plots; but theexecution here is very Quentin Tarantino!

Yay! You guessed it right. Imagine a very VijayAnand kinda thriller and character-driven amoral drama and execute it with a Tarantino-flair- that's Kaminey for you!

Maqbool, Makdee, Blue Umbrella, and Omkara - allthese films directed by this neo-cinema torch bearer, had one thing in common -the worlds inhabited by the characters.

Vishal Bhardwaj is a director who very brilliantlyuses the concept of mis-en-scene in his films, and hence we feel the tensionand moral and psychological murkiness of his movies even more. He takes greatpains to design the world he wants to take us through. He has done so inKaminey again.

The world he takes us through, well, some of ushave seen it from close quarters, and some of us have not. But that doesn'tmean this world doesn't exist. It certainly does and what's worse is that thisworld is loaded with paradoxes, confusions, bitterness and betrayals.

The world depicted on screen this time around byVB is frantic, edgy, and constantly degenerating. It's a beautifully placedmetaphorical display of a corrosive metropolis with just a common threadconnecting all the characters. The thread is - Dream!

VB throws in a bunch of absolutely eccentric, over-the-edge characters in this world and intercuts their dreams to give us anexplosive affair.

Kaminey is loaded with characters, sardonic humor, pain and madness. It's just amazing how he shows this world spiraling out ofcontrol.

If anyone had any doubts about Vishal Bhardwajbeing good with pen, then he/she should watch this movie. Kaminey has some ofthe most amazing dialogues and catch-phrases. The music - is there anythingthat needs to be said about that aspect? Vishal Bhardwaj is just extra-ordinarywith the music and the usage of Dhan Te Nan as a song or the background scoreis just hair-raising. The movie uses the song very carefully and cleverly.

The background score of this movie is justpulsating. Electric is the effect of the background score during the scenes andonly builds up the eccentricity and tension. Note the use of an almost operaticuse of music in a violent climax. Superior example of craftsmanship.

Camera work of this movie might evoke extremereactions - let's face it - the movie has been extremely darkly lit, but thenit just adds to the corrosive feel of the movie and the switch in lights duringthe Dhan Te Nan song is just tantalizingly playful and psychedelic.

Cast is huge - Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Amole Gupte, Deb Mukherjee and others as well. Kaminey has a host of artistesplaying host of characters and everyone is just too exceptionally talented tolet go off an opportunity like this to not perform! Everyone is exemplary - Iin particular like Amole Gupte and Sanyal. They were just outstanding.

Editing is one thing that really defines Kamineyas a film. This film could've lost all of its madness and rush had it not beenthe editing. It’s sharp and crazy. The intercuts are deserving of distinctionmarks.

Screenplay and direction - absolute masterclass. The fact that such a film has been conceived and executed is a testimony toVishal Bhardwaj's supreme command over the cinematic medium.

All in all - if you're the one that has anappetite for dark and hatke movie treatments, go for this one! This is visualdelight. Not so much of a plot-driven movie as a treatment and character-drivenmovie.

Cheers VB! Dhan Te Nan!
