Is it a palace? Is it heaven? Oh well, its Kalrashukla classes. Nevertheless, its opulent and aristocratic façade does mighty little to masquerade the authentic brilliance of the institution. Straight from the shoulder, I confess that the training I received at Kalrashukla is invaluable. Indubitably, Kalrashukla should be first on your map for preparatory guidance for the HSC examination. Or should it?
Discipline
The hallmark of the institute is its outstanding knack of maintaining discipline. Any contravention to their conventions of conduct is not tolerated. The workforce (mainly peons and clerks) ensures that students regularly attend lectures. Attendance is monitored and reported to the parent if it?s patchy. The lecturer cannot tolerate talking in class and if discovered, the consequences are dear. Surveillance cameras are installed in every class (including the toilets!) to spot mischief. Nonetheless, amid all this tyranny, one really learns. The student is focussed and does not budge from his goal. His only incentive is to come here, study and not indulge into disconcerting activity. It can be argued that at times such treatment can be quite harsh. I remember being publicly humiliated once by Prof. Ramesh Shukla for yawning and coughing in class!
Professors
The professors are what truly set this institute a class apart! The organization has taken immense care to endow the students with the best professors in Mumbai. Unlike Agrawal Classes, which procures only the toppers, it is Kalrashukla, which has the exceedingly arduous affair of creating toppers from mediocre students. The professors? stresses greatly on the concepts unlike other places where they expect you to cram 500 pages of text. The articulate professors are gifted with eloquence and they leave no leaf unturned to give the student an opportunity to create a brighter tomorrow. The Maharashtra Board Syllabus is all about learning by rote and writing exceptionally well-dressed papers. No intellectual manipulation whatsoever. Keeping that in mind, the professors have an exceptional ability to involve the entire class in the discussion making an allowance for students of various academic levels. There are a few contradictions though, but we can?t expect perfection, can we. Many good ones have left to start their own private classes hence the quality of professors has reduced slightly.
Tests
Topic wise tests are conducted on a weekly basis midway through the course. The dispute over tests being conducted according to the convenience of the management is justifiable. Even so, such tests greatly help the student to expose himself to the actual examination stimulated arena as well as behave as an incentive to revise through the topics formerly covered. The tests are corrected according to the latest correction conventions of the Maharashtra board. A well-prepared student will have no problem at all in tackling such intellectually insulting papers with immaculate effortlessness. Prelims are conducted at the end of the course. Students with high scores have the advantage to seek special attention from the professors on how to give his/her preparation the finishing touches. This may be considered as a segregation of the good from the bad; but it does make the student want to earn this facility by working hard.
Study Material
The study material has been painstakingly and meticulously revised to unerringly match the students? requirements for the exam. Every aspect is covered, although few chapters are in the form of fill in the blanks, which must be completed during the progress of the respective lecture. Special extra notes, not in the syllabus are also provided taking into account the numerous students preparing for competitive exams. The exercises along with the study material also gives the student good practice for this clerical exam. Students need not buy any textbook once they possess these notes.
For IIT/AIEEE/PMT students
Students preparing for competitive exams like the IIT JEE, AIEEE and MH-CET may endure many problems with lectures clashing every so often. The HSC approach being quite different from the objective approach of other examinations does to a degree yank a student from concentrating whole-heartedly on the competitive exam. For daunting exams like the JEE and AIEEE, one must remain focussed at all times and given complete attention; which being in Kalrashukla might prove to be quite challenging. The IIT batch that they conduct is nothing special. The claims of lecture flexibility is utter claptrap and basically nothing else but the latest ?feel-good factor?.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, a studious and assiduous student will show his magnificence whether he is at Kalrashukla or anywhere else. The sine qua non is that Kalrashukla is a place for focussed students and not troublemakers. The authoritarian and autocratic mannerism of the faculty does make students feel awkward in the beginning, but rest assured, it?s in the best interest of the students after all. The professors are really good, and even if a student encounters a substandard, shoddy teacher, he always has the provision of contacting the good ones and get his difficulties sorted out.
In spite of this, if the student has emerged with flying colours in Class 10, he must approach Agrawal Classes in Dadar. Kalrashukla does not acquire the cream, so basically it does not produce that many. Students preparing for competitive exams need not join as the syllabus has already been exposed to them at an advanced level. Their claims in the prospectus can be considered a tad gimmicked and merely an attention-grabbing publicity stunt. Investigate from past students the underlying legitimacy of their declarations before enrollment. To call it a moneymaking firm would be highly critical and unreasonable. Although, I must say, it is to a certain extent below expectations.
