I have visited Kolkata just once, five years ago, for a friends wedding. I found the city intriguing, Its claustrophobic underbelly inviting one to venture deep within its recesses, extending an invitation to find ones fear and then wallow in it. I also met the nicest people speaking the sweetest language. Horrendous Comb-overs and expressive large eyes. The city throbbed with contradictions that somehow fluxed together and made sense.
Kolkata is Kahaani's hero if Vidya is its heroine. Sujoy Ghosh constructs an absolutely marvelous puzzle that begs you to unravel it while it works its mischief around you. The film leaves one spell bound and hooked. The characters, even the smallest ones, come alive through brilliant portrayals by little known actors.
The music is spot-one(a masterstroke to use The Boss' timeless tunes - Sujoy is a fanboy), the pace is unrelenting(awesome editing) and the camerawork is an ode to Calcutta's spirit.
Revealing any more than what is already known about the story-line(a pregnant woman who travels from London to Kolkata to look for her missing husband) would be unfair to you dear reader. Watching this Kahaani unfold on the large screen is magic.
And what a Kahaani.
It made me write again.
Loved it.
