'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' is without doubt the best film ever made by an indian. The stiffs and swells may disagree. But this is THE film that future generations will remember us by. The film captures the essence of the essential indian-you can take a man out of india, but you can't ever take india out of a man. It doesn't matter what we do for a living, how we dress, how much we groove and rave.
In the end, we love being what we are. Intelligent and discerning, sensitive, yet accomodating and liberal citizens of the world. We swear by Gucci, drive the Beetle, listen to Pink Floyd. We also wear bandhgalas, walk, and think Lataji is Saraswati. Sachin is like God for us. But at heart we are irreversibly indian.
Which means that the family is a sacrosanct institution to us. We respect elders and look to them for guidance...always. We are fun-loving, boisterous people. We never forget that our modernity is but an extension of our past. Our traditions enable us to imbibe anything, the eastern, the western and anything else in between. But we continue to remain distinct from any other community. We think the British to be stiff and haughty. We take pride in our indianness. Erudition as also illiteracy. Shah Rukh and Hrithik. Varanasi and Soho. Saree and darebare threads. Kareena and Kajol. We are indians...we love us. Kasam se!
