Hello people..

I was surprised at the reaction of public to Karan Johar’s latest movie. Going by Karan’s standards, KANK was no different. The same rona dhona, melodrama, emotional idiotic dialogues, colourful backdrop, all in all a complete Bollywood package. But why does the public seem outraged and why is everyone criticising the movie? Is it because it deals with an extra marital affair? Or is it because a main stream director has taken the ‘tabooed’ subject and made it look like it’s acceptable to have an extra marital affair? Come on people, we are living in the 21st century and is this the first time that Bollywood has given us such a movie?

Well, personally I hate Karan Johar and his movies. Be it KKHH or K3G. The sole reason why I watched KANK was that I was surprised at the wrong kind of hype the movie was getting. Frankly, I wanted to see how a director like Karan Johar has handled the subject of extra marital affair! And guess what? I wasn’t disappointed! KJ doesn’t know how to experiment. He can make only eye candy movies and nothing else. He proved it once again.

We have two couples whose marriage is on rocks. Reason? Shahrukh is a loser, frustrated with his life and jealous of his successful wife! On the other hand, we have Rani who has no reason to be unhappy, yet very illogically she is frustrated with life too! These two meet (under very unnatural circumstances) and fall in love! Very typical of Karan. No surprises there. The movie just goes on and on with Shahrukh and Priety fighting over her work and Abhishek and Rani fighting over… Huh… Well, I don’t know what they fought over but they did. Rani and Shahrukh try to save their respective marriages but end up falling in love with each other. Yes, just like that. Well, the movie just stretches long enough and I am sure by the end, no one cared what happened to the lovers or their respective spouses.

Amitabh Bachchan has given a splendid performance as always and simply steals the show. Shahrukh has done a good job as the frustrated husband. Priety is simply jobless. She looks made up and plastic and delivers the few dialogues she has very artificially. Rani, for once, fails to deliver. The character she plays has numerous flaws and if the character had been edited well, she’d have been a treat to watch. I believe KJ didn’t have the time to think why a woman would be unhappy with someone who loves her so immensely. Alas! Had he given one valid reason for her unhappiness!!! Finally there is the wronged husband, Abhishek who has done justice to his role. His performance in a few scenes with Rani is worth mention.

The picturesque backdrop is awesome. Songs are good. But all said, the concept of the movie was good. The pathetic screenplay of course spoiled it all.
