KANK falls flat on its face .I did not excpect a classic but I did not even expect a film that is so dull ,drab and lifeless .Promising on paper ,hollow in execution ,KANK represents the worst damaging type of cinema in Bollywood.Karan Johar has missed the target this time and how!
Love is more than an emotion... It’s above all, the substance of our being, the gift of oneself .... It may only last a moment, an hour, an afternoon, but that doesn’t diminish its value, because we are left with memories that we treasure for the rest of our lives...That is what Dev[SRK] and Maya [Rani] think when they dare to fall in love despite the fact they are married to someone else.
Dev is a professional footballer, but becomes handicapped in a car accident. But his wife Rhea’s (Preity Zinta) career is on an upswing. She is an editor of Diva Magazine.They have a son, Arjun. Dev’s physical disability and failed career start to affect his married life.
He doesn’t get any help from his mother Kamaljeet Saran (Kiron Kher), who loves her son but usually supports Rhea when it comes to giving advice or voicing her opinion.
Then there is Maya , a teacher married to her closest friend Rishi (Abhishek Bachchan), who works as a PR consultant.Rishi’s father Sam (Amitabh Bachchan) is a fun-loving man and his life revolves around his son and daughter-in-law.
Sometimes a simple idea can be presented in a beautiful manner and the movie still manages to throw some new light onto a old story as well as completely entertaining the viewer .However KANK had a good idea on paper which goes totally awry on screen. From a writing point of view writer Karan Johar had the perfect story which could translate onto the Indian screen very well with its strong emotional content and he manage to copy Closer almost identically.However the screenplay goes completely haywire and fails to connect with the viewer. One has witnessed the Extra Marital saga over and over again and in order for it to make it worthwhile for the viewer it has to be presented in a new manner or even a fairly entertaining manner however KANK fails in both the department.
The film has loopholes aplenty. To start with, the reason that prompts Rani to engage in an extra marital affair is objectionable.. Hello?Does not Abhishek love Rani despite the fact that she is unable to bear the child ?More over there are talks on relationship ,destiny which we have watched time and again .In short the film lacks novelty which is its biggest drawback .
Karan Johar seems to be inspired by Ekta Kapoor brand of TV serial as well what with the story taking the leap of 3 years or 4 years several times in the narrative.The film moves at such a lethargic and leisurely pace that you start getting restless even before the intermission wraps up.
The post interval portions are dull and drab. And the latter reels, when both the party divorces their partner, the film falls into an altogether new low.Morever the climax [cliched train sequence ] is so lengthy that it is tests your patience. The audience was groaning and at this stage a lot of people walked out even .It leaves the viewer with the feeling of complete discontent and disapproval..Also this isn’t a clean film as the first half is laden with double meaning jokes [Especially Amitabh track ]which appear forced .
Its the performances that are saving grace...
SRK lives the role of Dev and this is no doubt his most accomplished performance to date. HE fits into Devs character like a glove and portrays all the motions and nuances of his character with utmost perfection. He leaves the viewer teary eyed and speechless. SRK hands down deserves a nomination foir BEST ACTOR in every Award ceremony.
Abhishek portrays his role with elan and his versatility and range as an actor will catch the viewer off guard. His delivery and facial expressions are just brilliant and he displays the right amount of maturity needed for the role of Rishi .After two brilliant performance in Paheli and Black Rani again delivers a flawless portrayl of a complicated character comes out in flying colours.One actually feels like they are watching Maya throughout the movie. Her eyes speaks volumes and this is no doubt her best performance of late.
Preity role shows the modern and changing face of Indian women .Plsaying a women who is totally career focussed with total conviction is not a easy feat but she plays her part with elanse.Her body language is just amazing. Arjun ’s role [Magazine editor] could have been played by any junior artist .Amitabh’s dialogues, facial expressions and body language is just too good and his scenes had the viewers falling off their seats...laughing...clapping....Kajol looks fresh in those sarees .
Technically the film is flawless to say the least and full credit must go to the entire team. No doubt KJ as a producer never leaves any stones unturned and kank is no different. The US locales are simplu equisite. Sharmistha ’s artwork is also splendid.
Music is definetly a plus point and definetly one of the major highlights of the movie. Right from the first to the last song...each song is exceptionally shot and well picturised. My personal favourite is the title track.
All up KANK disappoints big time...
