The coming of age of Karan Johar was what KANK promised to be. But as is usual with promises, they are meant to be broken, and so was this. Johar should stick to making candyfloss romances where he does not show anything negative. KANK is an extremely poor attempt at marriages and infidelity and the word --Relationships.
For all those who say there is no influence of Closer in the movie, simply remember one of the most power packed performances in the movie, Abhishek asking Rani how sleeping with Shahrukh was. The scene is lifted almost straight out of Closer with Clive Owen asking Julia, “Was he any good in bed?”
Not that the originality has been established lets discuss the plot of the movie. KANK fails simply because the Director wanted to play it safe and make it palatable to audiences who crave for a happy ending. The subject was good but Karan wants to depict infidelity in a manner that the protagonists cannot be blamed for it. Therefore, they are shown to be holier than thou who also do penance for three years to pay for their sins before getting back together. Shahrukh’s last conversation with his wife, “Main tumhe dua dene ka hak khone nahin chahta,” is the corniest ever and mocks what the movie set out to deliver.
KANK is like having an extremely watered down Old Monk. You can feel the flavor somewhere but the essence is lost.
Do I want to tell you the story, no, simply because most of you will still go watch it and hopefully be a little less disappointed than me. But one good aspect about KANK is the actors who have all done a commendable job at portraying human emotions and nuances.
Yet certain scenes seem too farcical and stretched. Amitabh singing and dancing with hot babes and suddenly switching to give a speech about love and marriage seems like a desperate attempt to draw tears. There has also been a lot of talk about the Big B’s role in KANK. Me thinks it’s simply a repeat of Boom.
On the whole, the movie disappoints simply because of a weak screenplay and the Director’s hypocricy to show no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil.
