What happens when you put together a talented director with four amazing actors, and hand them a brilliant script to work with? Nothing good? You would usually be right, but consider KANK an exception to the rule. In this brilliant portrayal of love, lies and relationships, Karan Johar gives us a closer look at life than many of us would wish to see.

The film narrates the relationship of two families - Rhea Saran (Preity Zinta), her husband Dev Saran (Shah Rukh Khan), their little son Arjun, & Dev’s Mother Kamal (Kirron Kher). And then there are the Talwars - Sam Talwar (Amitabh Bachchan) who is the patriarch & a flirtatious Casanova to the core, his son Rishi (Abhishek Bachchan), who’s obviously got his genes, and the girl brought up by Sam and his now deceased wife, Maya (Rani Mukherji).

The story gets more and more complex and the acting is so superb that it adds a certain believability to it that would lack with a less reputable cast.

Hindi cinema has often been accused of not deviating from the much-used-and-abused four/five plots since the past few decades. In that respect, KANK explores new horizons.kank is a well crafted dissertation on art’s reflection of the human condition, particularly the dependence on romantic relationships. It delivers an intimate film that actually achieves depths rarely seen on screen

As a director, Karan has extracted commendable performances from the main cast, but the treatment of the subject is city-centric. However, he shows sparks of brilliance in scenes that demand intensity .But there are two factors that dilute the impact considerably. The first is its music , which may be in sync with the content of the film, but isn’t haunting enough to leave a solid impression. In fact, a song or two can easily be deleted to make the length more concise as also make the goings-on crisper.

That brings us to the second aspect -- loose editing. Perhaps, the editor must’ve fallen in love with each and every frame of the film after watching the film over and over again. The film slows down considerably in the post-interval portions and deleting

a few songs and scenes would only tighten the narrative.

The performances are wonderful, with SRK enacting his portions ably. Preity zinta suits her role too. But the actual hero of the film is definitely Rani, who will walk away with all laurels at the end of the day. Her career-best performance, she oozes intensity, love, hate with perfection. .Abhishek shines so does Amitab
