Karan johar is back after a big gap and there are huge expectations from his new film. You expect to watch a great, larger than life cinema! Kank is all about that! It’s a bit different, bolder than the usual ‘bubble-gum’ karan johar flicks. But its made in typical karan johar type cinema – dance, song, drama and emotions.
Its about two couples; shahrukh-preity and abhishek-rani, whose marriages are falling apart. Its not that they hate each other, its just that things don’t work out inspite of trying to make them work.
Shahrukh is the reserved, quiet, unsocial type, who once played football but has an accident and limps thereafter. Thus his career is ruined and all he does is coach children to play football. Preity is the successful, hard-working lady, working for a popular magazine, ‘diva’. She has no time for family, which results in communication gap, insecurity, ego, among the couple. She, however loves her husband, but is too preoccupied with her work.
On the other hand, abhishek-rani aren’t having a great marriage either. Rani’s nature is similar to that of shahrukh, she’s not a ‘hip-hop cool dude’ type like abhishek is. Moreover she cannot conceive. Abhishek loves her, but they fight regularly and things don’t work out.
The couples meet each other. Rani and shahrukh remember meeting each other a few years back.they realize they are very similar and think in the same manner. they like each others company, become friends and start meeting regularly. They decide to help their respective marriages work, but in vain and instead fall in love with each other.
The foundation of both the marriages was weak and they break.
Amitabh plays abhisheks dad and kirron kher plays shahrukhs mom. Amitabh has done a pretty good job as a Casanova-type guy who makes out and freaks out. Abhishek has done an amicable job, doing justice in comedy, drama and serious parts as well. Shahrukh is his usual experienced self doing a decent job, doing a role suiting his age. Preity looks stunning throughout and has done justice to her role. Arjun rampal has a guest appearance as preity’s boss.
The songs are good and especially watch out for ‘rock-n-roll soniye’, having an excellent set and good choreography. It has a 1960’s theme and a very nice feel to it. Kajol makes an appearance in the song and john abraham in ‘wheres the party tonight?’Also watch out for the ‘ballet’ scene which is very beautifully done with excellent costumes. The movie has some pretty good humor too!
Overall its quite an okay movie, not all that great but watchable – a notch above the average. Everyone has performed well, especially abhishek. Preity zinta looks one of the best ever on screen, since her debut. So, go watch it if you want to or if you are a fan of one of the actors.
